For those with tunes!

Not sure if this has been posted yet! But looks like the dealerships
are automatically scanning for flash tunes.

long time coming. We aren't far off from OTA diagnosis and auto flagging.

a tech from a dealer posted a thread like this on m3 side.

Blowing a motor and getting bmw to foot the bill days are coming to an end. No more having a tech look the other way. Any tuner that says otherwise is lying.

BMW is hemorrhaging from fixing tuned cars, and those cars can't even be CPO'd either. So this was long overdue honestly.

Not surprising, Audi has been doing this for years, the dreaded TD1 flag. My Audi guy said the ECU has a counter that can't be bypassed and they keep track of any flashes they do for whatever reason. I used RaceChip on my RS7 and removed, cleared ECU before I took it in, no issues but also never blew an engine. Using Racechip on a leased M5 (don't care about the consequences) but I've not had any issues there and just took it in yesterday. All this said, a tune and Racechip are by no means equivilant as Racechip doesn't change ECU software as most know.

Really not surprised at all ... they've gradually become less tolerant of modding and warranty claims over the last 5-6 years.

My E39, E60 and F10 (13') M5's were all tuned and never had any issues with any warranty work or any other crap.

With my 15' M5 I went Piggy as I started to see the writing on the wall and really wanted to avoid the whole headache of tuning and warranty issues.

19' MSC is stock w/ just a cat-back, wheels, suspension and CF bits.

I just can't see how it's worth it to tune the car these days.......I would not want to risk blowing an engine and not having it covered.....for what, 2.1 in the 0-60 instead of 2.6?

The only tune I would like to go with, is a MAP that provides more pop and bang's, but if it voids my warranty i'll forget it.
The power is more than enough, and I have the "regular" M5.

It's possible to get an aftermarket warranty but chances are they will ask if your car is nodded and not cover the claim. It's a lose lose unless you pay to play. For the drive train warranty I would say it's not worth it for the smallish gains even for what you describe. Just get a decent exhaust you can live with

Piggy backs like the racechip will get flagged if you bring it in for drive train related issues. It sucks but bmw finally caught up to audi.

I won't do it.

I rather install a good exhaust system.

Will coding my M5 cause any issues with warranty and this automatic scan?

Aftermarket exhaust may void warranty too; back pressure, cats, opf, etc

Well, it depends.

If I go with a full cat delete, and downpipes of course my warranty will be canceled.

My car is 100% stock, If I entend to keep it I will install an exhaust system but will be keeping the standard downpipes and not removing the cats.

Literally anything you change can void your warranty or cause them to give you a hard time when doing warranty work. I've had to pay to replace O2 sensors when all I had was cat delete. Kept blaming back pressure for burning out the sensors.

Does this refer to the Dinan stage tunes as well? If i get a 2021 X5, I want the Dinan tune, not so much for more horsepower, but to remove the top speed limiter.

To pick up use of JB4 and RC would require a very deep dig (not happening for a regular service IME). and all they would see is higher boost targets, no hardware on car, no ECU changes. Since I bought mine with 3K miles, I and my lawyer would be very surprised to hear that some bastard prior owner would do such a terrible thing!

Wouldn't higher boost be the issue here?

Don't you think that the higher boost carry a time/mileage stamp with it in the ECU logs?

As I said, it will not come up in a routine service.
