Today marks the second time the steering wheel did not drop down to my preselected position based on my settings. And it would not move at all with the button on the side of the steering wheel that controls position. The first time this happened was a few weeks ago. After sitting it did it usual movement.

Has this happened to anyone else? I check the other boards including the present 5-series and it is a known issue. But, I didn't see much discussion surprisingly.

Yep, had this happen. I hit the memory button on the door when this happens and puts it to where it should be.

This and the whole seat thing.....where sometimes I'll start the car and won't go to my normal seat position and side mirrors will be all messed up. I suspect they are related somehow. It happens very rarely.

Thank god the steering wheel worked normally today.

Have an appointment for next Monday. The steering wheel fails to work every single day the car is left out on the sun. Works the next morning on the way to work. I'm going to need a new steering wheel column.

Happens with my seat position periodically.

If you're in gear, you need repeatedly press and hold the memory button.

If you're not in gear, you can press the memory button once.

Just an update for anyone searching for this issue later.

Just took the car into the dealer. They found fault codes and did a reset. Hopefully fixed. If this recurs suspect I will need a new steering column mechanism.

Did you ever get this fixed? My car is doing the same. I brought it in and they updated the software which did nothing. I'm taking it back Monday, but just curious what your outcome was.

It only happened when the car was in the sun during the summer. So it seemed heat related. It finally stopped in the fall and I held off on getting major work done to the steering column. It has not happened a single time since the end of summer 2020.

My UK spec 2019 comp did same today
The steering wheel did not drop down to driving position and the side mirrors were out of whack.
I could still adjust wheel and mirrors with the buttons.
I suspect it's cos I started fiddling with the idrive before everything set, and it skipped a few instructions on bootup.
I usually let everything boot up before fiddling as these modern cars are like waking up a computer from sleep or hibernate...you want to leave them to complete the bootup process really before trying to get it to do other stuff

For me, it didn't make a difference what I did. I would even recorrect the steering wheel right as I was getting out and would bring it back down after it auto-raised. Once the steering wheel failed to drop it remained completely unresponsive to controls until it sat for a while after I drove.

hmm, seems like all are a bit different. mine only drops a tiny bit with an odd noise. if I hit the button down, it moves another millimeter or so, with the same odd sound. I have to keep hitting the down button until it gets where I want it. only going down, not back up. going back up it's perfect. there might be some british electronics in there somewhere.

Had exactly same happen. Car sat in very hot sun last summer then wheel didn’t come down on startup. Completely unresponsive to whatever I tried. Had to drive two hours home like that.

Next day worked fine after being parked back in my garage over night and has never happened again since. Glad to hear I’m not alone with this one.

We had this issue.

It was fixed under warranty. Turned out to be a burnt out module inside the steering column.

Was your issue intermittent or did it just go bad and would no longer work?

Yes this happened to me. Dealer response we couldn't duplicate the issue

Update (FWIW), dealer replacing the entire column.

Update:
Mine now does not park in the up position when engine is switched off. The steering wheel is in the correct position for me and driving and still moves with the buttons, but may have to take to dealer incase there is an issue hiding in the electronics for the future

Update:
As mine was still responding to the adjustment stick, I used them to make sure it went through it's full range of movement i.e. in/out and up/down. I then did a hard reboot of systems by pressing the mute button for 30secs. Seems to have done the trick, all is working again
