M3 to M5 transition

Curious to get feedback from anyone who has made this transition? I’m still torn on the g80 but likely I won’t get that car with how it’s ending up to look. With that and my lease ending on my f80, I have been looking at the m5 comp LCI - does the car really look or feel much bigger than the m3? What did you enjoy most and least from that transition?

If you could do it again- would you or would you go smaller?

Lots of good info in link below. Two totally different cars.

It depends on what you do with it and what you want from it. I kept my E92 M3 and replaced my X5 with the M5C. Since I was replacing my everyday drive and winter vehicle, I needed it to be bigger and all wheel drive. And it is bigger than the M3. It is an obvious observation, but it is definitely something you feel when driving it. The power is silly, and fun in it's own way, but the M3 is definitely more fun to drive. So, if you drive it expecting it to be fun to drive and have no other requirements, M3 or M4 is the way to go (if you can stand the looks). I have a choice, and I choose to drive the M5 most days. More comfortable, quieter, easier to drive around in everyday mode. But when I jump in the M3, it sure is fun. It is smaller, louder, and more connected to drive. Just not something I want to drive every day. Generally, I've found it follows the typical pattern regarding age. As I've gotten older (late 50's) my everyday preferences definitely lean more towards comfort and stuff like how easy it is to get in and out. (Bad knees). I still have the M3 to occasionally take to the track. Even though it is stupid fast, I have very little interest in taking the M5 to the track, which is telling. If I could only have one, right now it would be the M5. 10 or 15 years ago, it would have been the M3.

I just made the switch 3 weeks ago! Like it has been said, two very and entirely different cars. I live in QC where snow days can get crazy so, a real no brainer with the new 4 or 2 wheel mode options to make the switch (hate the new M4). I also very much enjoy the space but, not gonna lie, feels a little big at times. I'm sure that will just take some getting used to. I do love the 4 doors (I had an M4) so its convenient... and love the luxury that comes with it all. A whole new level.

But in terms of power.... well, i'm not even fully broken in yet and wow. This car is mental. It's a whole other level, class, whatever you want to say.

To make a long story short, super happy to have made the move to the M5 ... and I haven't even had real fun with it yet.

I made the switch last November from a 2017 M3 Competition to a 2020 M5 Competition. Like everyone else says, they are 2 very different cars.

The M3 Comp is loud, quick, uncomfortable... everything you'd want in a sports car, right? I absolutely loved mine, my wife sat in it maybe 5 times over 3 years and never wanted to go anywhere in it because it was "too uncomfortable"... "Do you have it in Sports mode?" is what I heard all the time

The M5 Comp is heavy, comfortable, powerful... in Efficient/Comfort mode. Perfect for my wife and those days I feel like driving quietly. In Sport/+ modes, it's a completely different car: still heavy, but stiff, great handling and fast doesn't even begin to describe what you get out of 617HP and 553Lbs/Ft. It's completely insane how fast you get beyond the speed limit, whatever that speed limit may be.

The main differences for me are: the additional weight of the M5 is very noticeable, the power/torque numbers, the comfort/luxury/equipment of the M5 are in a different league altogether, and my wife loves driving it!

Would I make the switch again? Probably. Will I buy another M3/4 Comp at some point? Probably. If you can, drive the M5 Comp, you will feel the difference immediately. Good luck with your choice!

I had 16 M3 Manual and made the switch last month to M5. They are two totally different cars. M5 feels bigger / heavier but definitely faster and more comfortable. It was a hard decision for me as I loved my M3 but with fugly front end of G80, it made my decision easier. I do miss the manual but overall I am very happy. And with an expanding family, I think overall it was the right decision for me.

Not exactly what you are asking, but I had a M4 comp and New M5.

The M5 is faster in a straight line but I liked the M4 much much better.

M5 always felt too large and not buttoned down like m4. For me at least the M5 was much less fun to drive

What I find annoying about the M5 is not the weight, cause it's so powerful and corners so well that you don't feel the weight, but most annoying is the exterior size. You can't really point and dart for each available space in traffic, without fearing you may touch someone, the way I used to do with my smaller cars.

I was looking at the G80 as well, but without European Delivery I'm also considering a lightly used M5. I don't really buy cars I plan on selling soon after so the M5 would be kept long term as a daily driver. Even in the Minnesota winters.

What's everyone opinion on the longer term reliability of the F90? I'd like at least 6 years out of the car without getting into the double digits on repairs, excluding consumables. Also not planning on any tunes or modifications. I'm not expecting Toyota reliability, but certainly not interested in replacing turbos or something similar after a couple of years.

There isn't much in this thread of known issues - https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1711754

I had F80 M3 for 2 years. Its fun, light, loud and quick. Its much more fun drifting around or cutting lanes. Its fun to race. Car is very nimble.
It was all fun untill I started getting back pain. (Im not old Im just 21)
It was starting to get uncomfortable, and I do a lot of road trips.

I switched over to F90 M5 6 months ago, I love it, but I still love my M3, its just two different cars. My car is Tuned with downpipes, midpipes, exhaust, pushing 750HP, it feels like a rocket, very noticeable difference from the M3. AWD launch is crazy. I love the transition from comfort to sport. When you are crusing slowly it feels like a normal car, you have your massaged seats on, seat ventilation on, no outside noise, cabin is extremely quiet when exhaust is turned off. Everything feels very premium. The buttons, leather and steering feels much more premium than the M3. The ambient lighting is beautiful too. Auto lane keeping and driving assistance helps alot for long road trips.
The car is heavy so you do feel it when you are drifting or changing lanes, but its fine by me.
If you get it I recommend 200% tuning it asap, stock M5 is quick, but tuning it opens up the engine and throttle response alot, it is actually pretty scary on how quick the accelration picks up. You put ur foot down for 5 seconds and you are past 120.
Its the perfect daily driver.

As much as I love the M5, the M3 is no less, I d drive both cars anyday and have no complain with it, its just I like being comfortable and fast.
