Yeah I was reading that article, Autocar are pretty unbiased, will be interesting what they say.
More importantly, when Is Clarkson going to officially test drive the 135i on Top Gear.....

Read this week's shoot out with the scirocco, gotta say I think some of the comments were pretty much a question of personal taste. I mean, saying the VW is "loads better looking" is really a case of beauty in the eye of the beholder. Don't get me wrong, I think the new VW is a lovely looking car, but I prefer the look of the beemer (hence buying one)!

Utter crap
I am usually very impartial, but I have driven both the 3.2 and 2.0T TT's and they were both horrendous to drive. However, I have no doubt that the Gayman is a better car to drive and more involving, but look at the price difference! It also REALLY annoys me that they don't even bother to do the performance stats. I wanted to see 0-60 / 0-100 / 1/4 miles and 60-0. Instead they just use the manufacturers figures. I don't think a single UK magazine has done a true performance stat, it's really frustrating. The TT did look nice in white though... still at the end of the day, I am very happy with my choice, and don't feel the need to justify my purchase against the TT or Cayman.

The only reasonable comparison was on 5th gear between the 135i and the Cayman, and then the BMW pipped it to the post. You can check it out on U-Tube.
I too thought the article was a bit biased towards the Cayman, but they did mention the power/performance of the 135i was best out of the 3. I'm happy with mine and would happily thrash any TT or Cayman that decided to put it to the test.

I actually think things would be very close 'real world' with the TTS, but it would be nice to see real stats.

Even easier to chip a TT though... 310bhp is easily achievable and given the weight advantage makes it similar again.
I am really starting to hanker after a chip.... I WANT MORE SPEED

intersestingly enough, in the same magazine.....
the 123d coupe is No 1 in its class... sounded a very 1 sided arguement that you would never win, teh writer obviosly likes the caymen, end of. also slightly unfair as they have the 135 on long term test, so you are bound to loose some of the sparkle after a while, and likewise long term you will find fault in even the most perfect thing. |

The reviewer is the same guy who has the 135i on long term, so I thought the 135i may sneak a win.
Having said that, although the standard Cayman doesn't appeal to me, it is a very accomplished car. The Cayman S is a better drive than a 911 which is a massive achievement. It's just cost prohibitive and they should have made more about the cost IMO.

I'll be honest, i've never driven a Porsche of any kind, so i am biased towards the 135i. One day I may get one to test drive and then I may see the big picture (if there is one). Saying that, has anyone read Clarkson's report in this months Top Gear Magazine? Always makes me laugh that guy.

I'm in a fortuate enough position to have driven some exoitca, including a Caymen S.. (my dad has one and trusted me enough one weekend!!)
I drive a 123d coupe and so can't compare with 135, but don't really see how the caymen and 135 can be compared at all. Both cars are great but in different genre's. The porsche is amazing - but it is a proper sports car, and one I would personally not want to live with every day. The balance is incredible, and i doubt the 1 seires can match it, though i can't comment on the bmw power the porche feels quicker than figures suggest - and certainly it allows you to take corners quicker than the 1 series, and quicker than a 911 carrera i've also driven; despite being down on power. It is noiser.. has a harder ride and is cramped. the build is great but day to day things like the bluetooth phone are better in the bmw (porsche sounds like you are in a bucket!). Nit picking i know.. but there is also no postcode entry on the satnav! Add in the price differential, service costs (which also come around sooner), the 2 year only warranty, arrogant dealers (and lack of them), lack of BMW assist, and thirst and I can't see how you could ever be in a position to be deciding between these two cars. Unless of course you are loaded and can't choose between marginal practicality and power or looks and handling. But in that case you'd buy an M3! |

The heavy costs of the Cayman are to an extent offset by the amazing residual values.

I agree, but Porsche do tend to have some great PCP deals, albeit without a guaranteed buyback price.
