I'm going to get on the paddle shifters on rural backroads this week and pay closer attention to whether I can notice any lag like what you're describing. Mine is now out of break-in period and my escort redline360 is arriving today. If I can safely get some POV video of moving through the gears w the paddles, I'll post here for review. |

I may be in the minority here, but after driving manual transmission cars for 34 years, I sold my '15 M4 and '17 M2 for and ordered a '19 M5 Competition. I only tried the paddles ONCE. My right foot is the new weapon!!! The automatic just works fine handling all of the power and torque. I'm super happy with THE BEAST!!!

No delay here. Similar but not exactly the same feel as my F80.

What shift modes did you guys use? And engine modes?
Don't want to be in maximum attack S3 M Mode Track all the time. S2 or S3 with Efficient/Sport engine response would be where I'd drive mostly. S3 MDM M Mode Track for SPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED. And the noise of the SPEEEEEEEEEEEEED! |

At this price point BMW could afford to add whatever transmission option they thought was best and they did. That said, there is no way that an automatic transmission will be as quick downshifting as a DCT - just look at the mechanical workings of the transmissions. This topic has been often debated with respect to this car and I believe that the consensus was that the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages for the ways in which actual customers will use this car.

I just traded my 2020 M5 for a Porsche Cayenne GTS.
Having come from 6 prior Porsches, including two 911s, one of which I tracked, all with DCT, I can understand the OPs complaint. That said, it was my 3rd BMW and I always felt the tranny was a model of perfection. Is it as fast, immediate, and as intuitive as a good DCT? Absolutely not. My complaint, sorry for OT, was the very vague, silly putty steering. If you think the steering is accurate, provides any road feel, do yourself a favor and drive a Porsche. It’s literally night and day. I don’t often agree with reviewers about cars I’ve owned, as they usually only have them a short time. But Savage Geese nailed the M5 steering when he said it basically sucked. |

My F90 M5C Pre-LCi has next to no delay, shift inputs via the paddle shifters are crisp. My F40 M135 however has a similiar day to what you mentioned.

If I want to hoon around, I go S+ engine manual S3 shift MDM 4WD sport. Otherwise, if the car is in automatic mode I leave it on D1. Rarely use D2 or D3 except when I want to go flat out for a few gears from a standstill as you're either hitting the rev limiter or short-shifting during this scenario if you change gears yourself. If you launch it, even in manual mode the car will shift automatically. Also if you're hooning it, have the exhaust button on. ASD sucks but with the valves closed and the burble tune disabled you're missing out on the experience. Just make sure to roll down your windows, it will drown out the fake sound real good. |

The drive logic modes do not alter the timing between the paddles and gear change, rather it changes how fast the gears are changed once a command was sent , and in automatic it holds the revs higher, or lower before changing gears

I drive a base M5 and the paddles were on point. Felt like fireing an automatic weapon going through the gears. The car I drove had 3JK on the clock. It was a demo / test drive car.
My garage queen is a Turbo S so i have a decent frame of reference. You need to go drive another example. FWIW, I spent a full day at the M drivers program at Monticello July 2019, and again in Sept/October 2019 at City Field. Got to really spend some quality time in the M340, M2, M5 and M5C. Now I want them all for different reasons. Honestly the M2 was a huge surprise, biggest for me of the day. I was not expecting it to be that much fun to drive. Currently I DD a 540 ix M Sport and even those paddles are supper on point and responsive. |

Note also that the tranny will only shift most aggressively when you're really on it. PS: I drive in S3 almost (manual shift) permanently. |

The new RS7 is a ZF, too—shifts were slower than my M8 but, again, it was new so had yet to adapt. |

Sorry Man, no lag in this super toy.
I mean, no lag if you usually compare it 99% of international production. If your terms of comparison are Porsche and Ferrari, maybe you can find it a little a bit lagged. A little bit, maybe. Compared to M340i I would say it’s almost impossible. ✌🏻 |

All I know is this. In our M340 I drive around in Sport or Sport Plus with paddles. Any more throttle than initial tip in, hitting a paddle to car response is immediate, almost like my F80. Even in comfort with the shifter not in the S gate. Yes shift speed is different depending on throttle but the response is always the same.
This is simply not the case in the F90, and several POV drives convey this too. When you drive around normally, there is a sizable delay from you touching a paddle to the car responding. I tried S2 and S3. If you put the car into M Mode it brings down the response time. Not sure why that affected paddle response. Engine was in Sport Plus the entire time. This is where my issue lies. It feels disconnected. You can see the delay clear as day here when he drives. This is exactly how my test car felt regardless of mode. Skip to 13:40 and watch from there.
