Cheapest 5dr BMW on PCP?

Morning everyone,
It's my first ever new thread on a forum so be nice. I've been browsing on here for some time now and really enjoy every post.
I'm off to the dealer this afternoon so I'm after a bit of advice please.

I currently have a Z4 that requires changing due to the arrival of a baby. It's looking like my wife won't be returning to work so I need watch the pennies as much as possible. I had decided that a BMW would be too expensive and have been looking at other cheaper cars - Mazda 6 and Golf estate in particular. But my BMW dealer has persuaded me to pop in to see if he can do a deal - triggered by all the finance settlement requests I've had!

Basically my requirements are 3 series or above, 5 door. The only spec I want is leather heated seats. 48 months, 12k miles/year.
I had set my monthly max at £350 (Z4 as deposit) but I could justify going higher if I stick with BMW.
After giving the dealer this spec he came back with £423/month (1k deposit from Z4) for a 320d Sport tourer with leather heated seats. I'm guessing that it would have been cheaper if he'd upped it to an M Sport which comes with leather as standard??

This is where I'm after the advice. Rather than go through every spec, model and engine with the dealer, has anyone any idea which combination would work out the cheapest on PCP? Are there any options that don't increase the monthly payments?

I am aware of the brokers out there and the PCP calculator, but without the final figure I can't work out what the PCP quote would be. And of course TRL and RiazC - I don't want to waste these guys time as I'm unsure what I want.

I'd be happy with a 420i Gran Coupe SE or 520d SE Touring in standard spec but I think they'd be more that the F31.

My ideal F31 would be a 330d M Sport with heated seats, vis pack and pro nav but I think I can only dream!

Many thanks!

Definitely look at m sport to help your residuals, it's about Sales value vs final value and interest rate, make sure the SV is low, GMV is high and interest rate is low!

Definitely still try RiazC and TRL and be honest and see what they say!

Models such as the 320 depreciate quite a lot due to the number of company cars out there :/

Have you looked at the 5 series? There's 0% deals on them at the moment and a 520d won't cost much more at all.

And the new 1 series 5 door? Higher GMV I believe, but may be too small?

I would get three quotes, and don't not spec due to money savings, my 330d has every option that increased gmv on it, making it cheaper or hardly no difference on the monthlies. Things like pro nav, leather, venoms and m sport plus all help gmv.

Sorry if I'm not helpful

Hi Andy,
Thanks for the advice.
The 1 series is too small unfortunately.
I didn't know of any 5 series 0% finance deals - please can you tell me where to find details.

I'd really check those monthlies on the 520d. Lots more kit as standard than a 320d and a bigger boot for all the crap. Much of that spec you want is standard on a 5 series.

Or buy a used one. You can get independent PCP style finance on cars up to 2 years old, with interest rates around 5%.

Mate there's another broker site called broker4cars which has quite a useful pcp calculator that you can play about with which may be of some use.

I've just had a quick look and specced a 320i m sport touring.

I only added heated seats to it and set the deposit at 1.5k.

Payments were 380 pm with 10k GFV over 48 months.

I then tried 318d which is more expensive I think and that was 417pm.

Both were showing discounts of around 6k.

This does suggest that you can do a deal with the figures that you mentioned.

I'd draw up a bit if a short list on a spread sheet and do some comparisons and then see if your dealer is prepared to match. If they're not I'm sure TRL or Riaz will sort something for you.

Don't hold me to the 0% but I'm sure a fellow member said it was on bmw's website

Have a look on Peter vardy Bmw too (Google it) - they have pcp deals on their website and they're pretty good, definitely a good place to start, especially as you're focussed on price more than focused on one type of car, means you can be flexible.

I think you'll be surprised a 5 series may be a better deal, if not definitely look at a 330d as it may hold its value better, or 318d vs 320d as there isn't a huge load of difference.

I got an F30 330D MSport with the Plus pack, Pro Nav, Visibility Pack and Interior Comfort Pack (no heated seats though - but it can't change the monthly payments much given its a low cost option) for £415p/m on a 3 year deal with a £3.5k deposit.

Given your Z4 is probably worth more (or the equity in it) I think you can manage a deal on a F31 330D given discounts are high at the moment and if you can get a stock car might be able to get a good deal given the facelift is round the corner.

Their apr is set at 5.9% so it might be that when you go to bmw your payment will be cheaper still if the 4.9% deal is still available.

If you can do most of the groundwork before even setting foot in the dealers then you'll be on a much stronger footing than the average guy who may not be as clued up. You will also be able to gauge how had (or not) the dealer is working to get you a decent deal.

I forgot to ask, did you have any preferences re diesel vs petrol?

A 520d with heated seats as standard is £399 per month and £399 deposit which I'm sure the Z4 can cover

Hi Rich100, I'm not too fussy about the engine. I have the 2 litre petrol at the moment and I like it. Although I presume it'll kill residuals in a 3 series and 5 series?

£390 a month sounds good on the 5 series. Is that for the saloon or touring? And where were the figures quoted from please.

Piono's comment made me laugh. I look at cars every day and it took me 9 years to change the last one! I'm being slightly hasty with the change this time as circumstances have changed and I need to swap before the z4 value falls off a cliff at the end of summer.

Touring or GC wold probably fit the bill quite well from a practicality point of view.

Both easily have enough space to accommodate all the stuff you have to cart around for a baby.

Whilst I think the saloon looks great I Would recommend going for a hatch of some description with children as I've found it just seems to make life eaiser.

It is for a saloon but the extra £100 per month for an M-Sport touring (from the same dealership) isnt worth it in my eyes.. I have three kids who (back when they were younger and even now) have plenty of space in the F10 and E60 for that matter. The boot is plenty big too.

The quote is from Harry Fairbairn but Peter Vardy have this offer on a touring:

Monthly Payment £398.00

Annual Mileage 8,000 miles
Customer Deposit £1,498.00

Thanks for all the comments guys. The salesman ended up cancelling the appointment because he had to take the day off. At least it'll give me more time to research.
The 5 series is looking like it's winning at the moment.

Just be wary of the high depreciation on the 320d or 318d tourer or saloon.

My Xdrive 320d Msport tourer had 13k off when bought last June as a used car and even now when I sold it with little miles (13k on a 63 reg) its lost a shed load.....they really plummet in the first 1-3 yrs regardless.

I'd try and get into a 330d or better still a 335d as they will depreciate slower and are far more desirable down the line....just look at Autotrader now and there's not many around unlike the 320d which are everywhere.
The 6 cylinder diesel is a much nicer unit if you can get a deal afford the monthly figures.

I think the 520d is a better looking car ( estate ) in Msport trim IMO.

I think the new M5 used is the current bargain which I'd like to test sometime soon.
