B&W Settings with EQ
Hi all,
So I promised I would put up info on EQ settings for B&W upgraded sound system. It is one of the best systems in a car I have heard. It is truly amazing for the sound produced with the driver sizes and physics involved. Side note, we consider ourselves audiophiles of sorts and our home system has equipment that is some of the best in the world that eclipses the price of some new cars. Anyone who states the system is underwhelming or lacks performance is wrong and doesn't know how to set it up or is using crap source content. Will post video to YouTube… High level: I ran my MacBook Pro to the BMW M5 B&W sound system to do frequency sweeps, those sweeps were played through car audio system calibrated to SPL output of matched mic, and high accuracy calibrated mic for signal analysis. The system doesn't need many tweaks as you can see in EQ settings. There are a few nodes caused by the cabin, those are at 140Hz, and around 300Hz, but there isn't enough EQ resolution to tune out the nodes as much as possible like I can on my big home system. Enjoy! |

Sounds good and all but That picture doesn't do much to actually say what settings you are in. Or what level the frequencies are.

I'm no audiophile, but I do enjoy SET amps with some holy grail 300b tubes and full range drivers, so I have my own idea of how something should sound to please me. I've also built cars for SQL competitions, so I know how difficult it is to make a car sound ok. The B&W is nice for what it is, but for me, it only sounds proper with the "On Stage" DSP setting and flat EQ...

Thank you for doing this. Im by no means an audiophile but I tried your settings and in my opinion the base was way too low for my liking. I will say that the quality and clarity was better and improved overall but I would like more bass. Would you recommend that its okay to use all other settings you have but keep the base at +4 where it sounds much better to me? Or would that ruin the whole range totally? I listen to mostly new/old school hip hop and reggae and african/arabic music. I do appreciate your help with this. |

Hi, got my M5C in April. So disappointed with the B&W system. Especially with the bass, or specifically the sub-bass which is seriously lacking.
After messing around with the settings for many months, I used a test tone CD. I played 50Hz, 60Hz, 70Hz and 80Hz. What I found is that 100Hz is just that and does NOT boost anything below 100Hz at all. The bass setting is what improves sub 100Hz frequencies. So, here are my settings. I listen to a wide range of music, but most of the time, electronic. Bass +10 (max sub-bass) 100Hz -5 200Hz -4 500Hz -2 1KHz +1 2KHz 0 5KHz 0 10KHz +1 Treb 0 Fad -3 Mode - Studio These settings have taken me months to find and I strongly recommend that you try. As the bass setting increases 100Hz, 200Hz, and 500Hz, these need to be dialled down as per the above, otherwise you get a huge boost to the nasty sounding mid-bass. |

I swear the B&W has had some kind of bass upgrade, at least with the 2023. I vividly remember mucking about with EQ and everything on my 2019 and not getting anywhere near the volume and bass I am getting with this year's. Or maybe my ears are just more sensitive with age. I can also recall hills inexplicably having an incline both directions.
I've actually had to pull the bass back a bit on the EQ. It's too much. It's also possible my 2019 just had issues? |
