M5 or M8GC?
I’m thinking about moving on from my M6 GC, and I’m trying to decide which way to go. I want the better performing car, and based on the lower weight and shorter wheelbase it looks like that might be the M5? I had three M5’s before my M6, and I feel like the M6GC CP felt sportier than my F10 M5. But, I’m not sure that will be the case with the current comparison.
I’ve driven the M5 CP and the M850i, and I’m looking to find an M8 GC to test. But, in the meantime, has anyone already gone through this process? Thank you |

M8 GC for sure! It's huge but I LOVE it!

Not much to add, however, I’d been reading George Kacher’s reviews of the M5, M850 and I think 8 gran coupe over the past few months.
I seem to be left with the impression the M5 is the best of the group. Kacher had gone on to say the M5 is the best BMW available (maybe even for some time if I recall correctly) Anyway, three really beautiful cars. |

I'm a wagon lover so RS6/E63S will always be my choice but of the two, I'd go M5 over M8GC. For the looks, I think the M8 looks pretty chunky and while the M5 looks boring it seems more "svelt" due to the harder/crisp body-lines compared to the M8's more curved and soft body-lines which make it look a bit more portly. The M6GC design is honestly still one of the most beautiful modern BMW's to date, nothing has topped it in my opinion.
Interior on both are great in materials and pretty lackluster in design. I haven't driven the GC yet (only driven the coupe), but to be honest I don't think the differences will be that large or noticeable in the handling/dynamics to warrant one over the other, especially based on price (more on that below). Also do know they both have ZF transmissions compared to your DCT (or manual). Some like myself don't like the ZF, some do, so you'll have to drive it. The M5 is lighter than the F10 but honestly, it feels its size and weight, and I'd imagine the longer wheelbase of the M8GC will add to that feeling. The biggest issue i have with the M8 is the price. I loaded up two equivalent spec'd M8GC and M5 (both comp pack) and the difference is $25k, and personally I don't think the M8 gives you $25k worth of extra equipment or experience. I also like sunroofs on my M cars (another unpopular opinion) and no M8 has that option, and weirdly massaging seats are a missing option on the M8. With the M5 discounts are already pretty easy to get, so the M8 would need significant discounts to be worth it in my opinion and I'm pretty sure the coupe and vert receive bigger discounts than the GC. I know these are $100k+ cars, but still, $25k is $25k, hell that's a Miata right there. Good luck with the decision OP.

Georg should know . . . but then he's not you!
We have an M8 GC in-stock and an M5 in-transit. I could answer that question for myself soon, but I'm not you, either. |

I don’t have experience with the M5 aside from a ride along at the BMW Performance Driving School. I drove the M8 Competition though and it was my least favorite car at the Driving School. It was heavy and not fun to drive, but it did have a lot of power.
The M5 seemed more responsive but that was as a backseat passenger. |

Your M6 is arguably sportier than M8, so wouldn't swap if I were you.

I was lucky enough to drive the M5 Comp and M8 Comp at the BMW event in Monticello. I definitely enjoyed the drive in the M5 significantly more than the M8, but the M8 looks really damn good to me (albeit a bit Q60-ish vibes from the back end).

M8GC is so awesome, so is the M5, but the M8GC just stands out among the two. I would go that route if it were me.

Not sure if it matters but Id imagine the M8GC will likely hold its value better in the future, potentially making the upfront cost different irrelevant. But then again, that's just speculating.

The M5 is a nice ride but the M8 GC is just so much more bespoke. Aside from its slightly boring dash design I think it's an incredibly desirable sedan.

M8GC all the way for me. One of the best looking BMW's in years, even more so than the 6GC which I liked. This car, especially the rear, has a lot of Aston Martin lines IMO, which is only a good thing.
Make mine in Ametrin please

I feel similarly. Do you want a 4 door super car from BMW? What about a 4-door super car from BMW that's mechanically nearly identical to the one i was talking about a second ago but that costs $25K more and has a smaller back seat? The M8 makes sense to me. You buy it when you want an M5, but you only need 2-doors. The M5 makes sense to me. You buy it when you want an M8 but you need a real back seat. If you need the rear doors, i'd assume you need to use the rear seat on a regular basis and would appreciate having usable space back there. If you don't need the rear seat on a regular basis, i'd assume you don't really need 4 doors either. Plus...y'know. The money. |

I got 4-doors only for the dog since we didn't have an SUV then.
