Nail in run flat, advice needed,

I've been noticing rear driver side tire has been leaking air for about .5 psi daily for a few days because I check tire pressure every night. Today I finally had the time to inspect the tire. As I suspected, a nail is in the tire. See my attachment.

I need advice from your guys.
1. Patch it myself, any potential danger or damage to the run flat?
2. Bring it to dealer, how much will it cost?
3. A tire shop.

Guys, any helps or suggestions, thanks in advance.

PS: I've been enjoying my 330i since day one.

2. i don't think ur dealer will be offering to patch ur tire, instead will advise u to buy a new one from them!!!

3. since the nail is on the tread, i would take it to a tire repair shop that have experience patching rft.

Looks very close to sidewall, may not be fixable, I think the rule is within 2-inches of sidewall is not good. I had a screw in center of my runflat and had it repaired no problem as PSI never went below 26. Repair cost $25. Dealer was quoting me $350 for the tire alone not incl. labor. There's a pdf somewhere on the web that is an official release from goodyear on how to inspect runflats for damage to sidewall, if you can find that bring it to your local tire shop. Just in case, print out Tire-Racks price for replacement tire and bring to tire shop, if it's a good spot they will usually honor tire-racks prices plus a little extra. IMO it looks unrepairable or at least too close to call.

WOW, you check the air pressure every night!

I agree with jubol, just take it to a professional shop. The only thing I would be concerned is that the nail looks to be close to the side of the tire. This could potentially damage the reinforced area.

I had been checking tire pressure daily only after I discovered the leaking last week. I used to check it once a week.

I have shot a better picture by placing the camera in the center. It's more than 1'' but definitely under 2'' from the side.

My dealer didn't mention anything about tire protection. Anyway, I wouldn't had bought it. I am now thinking of going to a tire shop and have them patch it.

I had the same flat/nail on my RFT, it was at the shoulder like yours:

Advice:

1. Never plug a RFT
2. Patch it!

Issue:

finding a tire dealer that can do it, most wont for they like to see you spend money on new tire.

Solution.

Dont give up, find that dealer that will, even if they wont give receipt.
Cost to repair it $45.

or find a member that has RFT tires spares to sell.

My Lessons:

Finding qualified tire techs are problematic at a cost Im willing to spend, RFT are expensive to maintain unless yu have good insurance.
Find you a spare now from members, so yu are ready when you need it replaced.
Looks like govtec has a spare to sell.

I trashed my RFT for conventionals

Just called one of my local Big O, the guy said "We don't repair run flat tires, you have to buy a new tire", WTF?

Then I called aoother Big O, and this time the technician say they can repair it if it's repairable and repair it from inside, but then he asked my rim size, and whether it has a tire monitoring system, I told him 18'' and yes, my car has a tire monitoring system, he then quoted me $75 since he needs to reset the system.

if you going to buy a new tire, yu might as well get a hold of govtec, a member, and get his 2 tires for sale, if they are the same, atleast you have both tires on each axle with the same new thread wear.

look again, it took me a long while to find someone to fix it, for they dont want to be liable too. dont give up.

wla1000: I don't believe our e90 has a built in tire monitoring system per se. The low pressure warning system is a function of DSC calculating wheel rotational speed at each corner...so there is no system to reset other than the recommended tire init function, done through i-drive or BC stalk...

I had a nail in one of my runflats, Discount Tires patched it for me for free. They said that bridgestone allows u to patch it once and only once. I have no clue why.

just take it to a tire shop, the vast majority won't have any idea if the tire's a runflat or not. If they don't ask, dont' tell.

You didn't let the tires pressure go low, so the tire's fine.

don't let the people who got suckered into buying a new tire sucker you in with them........................

Yea great advice man. If they dont think its a RFT then they will fuck up the rim. I learn from experience on my Mini Cooper S. They fucked up my rim because they didnt have the proper equiptment to deal with removing a RFT from the rim. So they beat all my rims to hell. So no. Take it to a good tire place. One that keeps RFTs in stock and puts them on and takes them off rims. Or else you will have a huge problem on your hands. Like me they wouldnt pay for my rims. Stock S lites are expensive as shit on my MINI so i didnt bother replacing them.
