High Mileage Daily Drivers...few questions for you...

Guys -

I made the mistake of test driving a M5 yesterday. Wow.
I'm in NJ, and drive 20000 miles/year. Really concerned about the wheels. I have a 550ix now which has 19s and I've replaced quite a few tires/rims (probably 15 tires, 7 or 8 rims) over 8 years.

Anyway - how are your wheels holding up and what size? 19's are hard to find so really concerned about going to 20's.

For those of you who are NOT heavy footed, do you get 400 miles per tank range by any chance? I really don't want to live at the gas station but I am so damn tempted.

Appreciate any input

thx

I’m getting approximately 250 - 270 miles not the 400 it starts out with. I’m still under the 1200 break-in period and drive very conservatively.

I have the 20" wheels and have had the car just under 5 weeks now (less 1 week for PPF/ceramic) and i have over 4100km on it now (just over 2500 miles).

Took the family from Windsor ON (Canada) down to Knoxville TN and back and i was really impressed on the mileage, I think 400 miles per tank is entirely reasonable as I am now getting between high 500km up to 700 km per tank. Its a multivariate equation - primarily being that the mileage will improve as drivetrain break-in occurs but my foot is also getting heavier! The above Knoxville trip was after break-in service and i got around 24 mpg (imperial) which i think is amazing considering i had my wife, 2 teens, and 300 lbs of luggage and was clipping along - averaged 132km/hr (82 mph) for the round-trip and that includes the traffic crawling construction slow downs and rush hour... suffice it to say velocity was made up in other areas to get that average Our 2011 buick enclave would have used the same or more fuel going only the speed limit - and no massage!

PS> I kept it in efficient / D1 most of the way to keep revs down - it won't hold the gear as long and will upshift to overdrive sooner which helps on the highway.

20's are fine although I have not driven the M5C on 19's. I'm coming from a 2016 M4 on 19's.

I do 400 miles per tank easily and closer to 420 but mostly highway and rarely city or stop & go.

Current mileage around 11,000.

At the track I did 105 miles on a full tank

700km with one tank? You'd probably have to put sails on the car to get that low consumption I seriously doubt you'd even get 400km out of one tank with 132km/h avg speed too.

I've put 7,000km on my car in 2 months and my lowest fuel consumption so far has been 13.9 (that's L/100km). I wouldn't put my hopes on getting 400 miles out of one tank OP. Once you get used to the power you'll definitely want to push the car

400 miles per tank is pretty easy if you don't drive it like a maniac all the time. I had an M2 as my DD and I could barely get 250 miles per tank. I drove me bunkers to have to stop at the gas station at least twice a week. I'm very happy with the range on the M5! LOVE THE CAR!!!

With a 70L tank (back to the E60 days), I'd say you'd have to be a very tame driver to get 400 miles out of it and those miles would have to be extra urban traffic entirely.

If I’m correct and the gas tank it 20.1 and assuming you will fill up at 18 gallons you would have to average 22 miles per gallon.

I am averaging 20.6 mpg in my 540ix M Sport. With 50/5o highway city driving. Also use Conforti 60 percent and sport plus when I want some fun.

I cannot see you getting 400 miles to a tank with an M5.

I drive 18-20k per year so I totally get the concern. I don’t want to fill up 3x a week.

It’s what crossed the RR sport off my list of Suv’s

M5 gas milage debate...seems ironic.

Buy a diesel or hybrid if the concern is gas milage buy and m5 for the driving experience.

That said my cayenne s gets worse overall than the m5 and I certainly do not drive lightly.

I think the OPs concern (my read) is not so much about gas mileage but rather having to fill up too often - his words “don’t want to live at the gas station”. Personally I wish it came with a 100L tank. That aside, for the performance I am impressed - obviously I would not factor in fuel efficiency (or lack there of) as a reason to buy but if you drive at cruising highway speed you should achieve 400 miles no problem once broke-in (I use 94 octane). However, mixed driving / heavy throttle / lotsa urban cycle - of course no chance at achieving that range!

I've been doing 500 miles round trip from CT/NY up in to Vermont this summer and even with the mountains am averaging 23mpg with average speeds around 75 (overall average)

I also have both the 20 and 19s and swap them out Oct/April. I love the ride quality of the 19s.

No wheel or tire damage yet and I'm at about 10k miles. I did get the tire and wheel warranty included with my purchase

Thanks guys...

Appreciate the input. And yes - i'm not as much concerned about the mpg as I am about the range. On my F10 I'm doing about 360-380/tank and it drives me nuts being at the gas station 2x per week.

Seems like wheel damage thus far for most of you has not been an issue - that is good to know.

i had 20's on my f80 comp, and 20's on my m5 comp currently.

only got 2 flats, and that was due to craters on the LIE and NJ turnpike.

besides that, just stay away from run flats and dodge the craters!

The F90 M5 has the same size tank as your F10. You can expect the same/slightly lower mileage on the F90, depending on how heavy your foot is.

I get consistently about 20.5 miles per gallon with my daily commute in sport plus 99% of the time.

On the highway for a long drive I had the car in Eco and was going about 75 to 80 and got about 23 miles per gallon. So for 20 gallon tank, 400 miles on a fill up is usual. I did a painful 2 hour test at 65 (painful because I don't like going at the speed limit LOL) and I got 25 mpg. Was driving by myself so only 1 ton of passengers for that ride.

I have the 20 inch rims. I have not had an issue yet. I had 19's on my RS6, 150k miles, never damaged a rim.

You have to move out of NJ or pave the roads yourself. You probably should get the 19 in rims since you'll need the extra side wall height which can make a flat less likely. Does the Waze app include pot hole postings?

You guys must drive like cowboys.. at 7,000 km driven now in the 7 weeks I’ve owned the car, and my mileage per tank has varied between a low of 655 km and a high of 828 km (I’ve broken 800 km on a tank 3 times). Granted I tend to run the car down to 5 km to empty before filling it.

However, 98% of my driving is long commute highway with very little congestion.

The runflats on the 550 probably Goodyear's, had major bulge and puncture issues. This doesn't happen on non run flats anywhere the rate.

I ordered the car with 19” for that reason.

My last fill up showed over 500 miles on range.

If I’m on the highway, I’ll put it in efficient.

I do 18000 + a year and lease.

I do 5.7 mpg at track weekends.

I get 27.7 mpg on the highway.

Do the math. Don’t drive like the stereotype on the road. Save it for the track.

Gotta love those who track this car! Pure Fun I am sure, but isn't a 911 more fun on the track?

17000 and no issues (apart from crappy stock rubber but that was readily remedied).

My right foot is made of star matter and I average 14.5mpg. Freeway driving yields over 22mpg consistently. 400 per tank is optimistic to say the least for me.

I guess it depends on what your budget is and what you’re looking for, yes?
