Motorsport HQ: BMW X8 heading to production, but with ///M touches

https://motorsporthq.com/rumor-bmw-x...ith-m-touches/

Quote:
Just a few months ago we reported on a future BMW X8 crossover which was still in the feasibility phase. At the time, we said that if it gets the go-ahead, the X8 will not be a coupe-version of the X7, but rather having its own identity. We also mentioned that if it will indeed come to market, the ///M division will be the one working on the X8. A future X8 M was being planned, along with an M Performance model of the same crossover.

The decision was supposed to be made by the end of this year, but according to a new report from Automobile Mag, that decision might have been already made. The US magazine reports that the board gave the green light to the X8 models, with one of them featuring an M Power plug-in-hybrid powertrain that incorporates a 168-hp, 184-lb-ft electric motor and 60-kWh battery pack for zero-emissions driving range of up to 60 miles.

From our own sources, we heard that almost certainly the future X8 won't take the shape of an X6 or X7, but rather have its own identify within the design language at BMW. Think along the lines of a new kidney grill design and a one-off design language. The X8 has always been rumored to be a more luxurious model, with a more bespoke finish for the discerning customer looking for the ultimate luxury. It will also be more expensive than the X7 and will most likely become the priciest car with a BMW roundel on you can buy.

The G09 X8 will use the same underpinnings of the X7 but will offer seating for four, with individual seats in the back, kind-of like what we can already see on the X7. Whether a third-row of seats will be offered remains unknown right now.

We don't know the production timeline of the X8 yet, but it's fair to assume that it won't arrive before 2022.

Maybe BMW should focus on making a few decent cars instead of many mediocre cars.

Just a thought.

I was starting to worry, we were not going to get another model in the line up!

Better question is which one from the 2017-2019 lineup isn't. Better question still is what BMW feels like it has character or a soul. Hard to answer both

Holy crap... is this really necessary? They already have every variation of sedan, wagon, SUV and 4 door "coupe" designs. I don't see how such micro differentiation of product lines is beneficial to making money. Instead of niche products, can't they just spend money on creating a few great cars?

I can see why Audi is taking over as the most popular luxury car brand... their products are pretty straightforward and quality is top notch for this category. BMW is still more fun to drive, but build quality is falling.

Looks like 8 series two-door models are being axed.

Now I know why.

Well we can start with the front wheel drive BMWs, the GT cars, and maybe end with the i3. Also, the F30 wasn't much to write home about, especially if you skipped the sport/msport pkg. Are they bad? No, but they aren't really great either.

Point is, it feels like BMW is lost. With focus, they can do much better and they should do better.
