Break in procedure?

Just picked up an F90 this afternoon.

Donington on Black extended leather. So far the car has about 70 miles on it and I was curious as to what the break in procedure is for these cars. Is there a speed limit or maximum rev limit for the first 1200 miles?

It is a daily driven car and I have no plans to track the car, but I would like to know what the limits are in terms of breaking the car in properly.

I have not been able to find this information anywhere. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks in advance!

It's not locked, you should not go faster than 150 km/h and don't let the car rev past 4500-5000 rpm.
That's what bmw told me for my past 4 M cars.

Oh it's the never ending how to break in the car question.

A forum member did ED for his F10 M5 and when asked the same question, they told him to drive it however he likes it.

I say just drive it however you like it, people by nature can't be trusted, if going over 4500rpm or 150km/h is really detrimental to the engine, BMW would have put a hard cap limit on it before the first service.

Agreed.

I'm still under the 1200 miles and I pushed my car to 5000 rpm several times and have even floored it to reach past 6000 rpm. Loved it!

Euro delivery for my F80 M3 the guy mentioned to keep it under 100, and take it easy on the rpm's. Definitely vary the rpm's as well (no cruise control). So with that said, I broke the car in for one day, then took it on the Autobahn to 145mph and drove a few laps on the Nürburgring. I plan on doing the same with the M5 euro delivery.

The break in period refers to the wheel spin and rubber you lay down exiting the dealer lot after pick up.

Just picked up the M5 CP ...they told me for the first 1200 miles break-in period I can drive the car hard since it is software/power restricted.....following 1200 mile service an M certified mechanic will remove this ECU software restriction thus all power will be unleashed....

I believe that there are other posts on this topic, but my understanding was that the 2019's were not being electronically limited (that is, launch control is active out of the gate). They strongly recommend that you not abuse it for the first 1200 miles/2000 km.

I thought someone posted a screenshot of the bmw guidance on this, but can't seem to find it quickly.

Just keep it under 5k RPM until the 1200mi service. That’s what was suggested/recommended by my dealer.

It's in the manual. There should be one in your car, and it's online at:
BMW Owners' Manuals

I'll save you the trouble because for some reason I always get a chuckle reading the last, highlighted line below:

Engine, transmission, and axle drive
Up to 1,200 miles/2,000 kmDrive at varying engine and road speeds, but do not exceed 5,500 rpm and 106 mph/170 km/h.
Avoid full load or kickdown under all circumstances.

At 1,200 miles/2,000 km
Have drive-in checkup maintenance performed.

From 1,200 miles/2,000 km to 3,100 miles/5,000 km
The engine and road speed can gradually be increased to a constant speed of 137 mph/220 km/h.
Use the maximum speed of 155 mph/250 km/h only briefly, for instance when passing.

Wish I could pass on American roads at 155 mph...
But seriously, read the manual. It's a pretty quick read and there is actually lots of interesting info in there about features you may not discover otherwise.
Enjoy your car!

Drove it like I stole from day one! Even though the dealer didnt tell me to take it easy for the first 1200 miles my plan was to do it anyways but it didnt happen. I just had too many people wanting to sit in it and feel the power. I never felt any limitations in power. Got my 1200 mile service done about a week ago and there is no difference in power and the car is fine. Its as stupid fast as it was on day one.
Im not saying everyone should do the same and not follow the break in procedure. Just stating what I did and the cars fine. Dont overthink things and forget to enjoy your new toy.

I always found it interesting that there is a 1,200 mile break in period. How are you supposed to take your M5 on the Autobahn for ED and keep it under 170 km????
