Vegas bet is they ordered the oil on Monday and are now panicking. They'll have to find a dealer willing to give up some stock....I think it takes 3 bottles.

Yea I'm realizing the inefficiency of the service departments. They had the car sit 3 days before even ordering the fluids from the warehouse. Lots more to say but I'll spare.

Question regarding 1200 service: Is enabling launch control part of this service? Is it supposed to be disabled before and is it called out as one of the items?

Yes, they turn that on also.

It is my understanding that LC is activated at 1200 miles service. The LC on my current F10 M5 is pretty lousy so I seldom use it.

Curious to see how LC is on the F90.

That list was on my 1200 mile service plus the Fuel Pressure Reprogram Recall and the Check Catalytic Converter Clamp Torque TSB.

ECS has both oils listed as "ships in two days" but they often LIE their asses off on availability. I'd rather see "in stock". But the total price for both is $300.

Still waiting on dealership to call with a date!

My dealership lied about the transmission fluid.

The parts department said it was in stock and once I got the car back on the paperwork it said it was skipped because of no parts, the service rep didn’t even bother to tell me, he just claimed it was all fine and no issues.

I don’t get why they just have to lie about shit like this, disappointing that they do this. If BMW NA still follow up with a call to rate the service they will be getting a low mark jut like they did when they didn’t close the hood on my 335is properly after a service.

That is completely disgusting and unacceptable. I am waiting on a call from THREE different dealers for this service appointment. I don't understand why BMW does not get on this issue. There are multiple different grades of differential fluid and many other bands. It would not take long to put together a list of appropriate alternative fluids. Or at least CALL the customers or send a letter explaining the situation and also for the Love Of God, tell us what is so special about the fluid for the rear that is not also 'best' for the front differential.

I can't believe that the fluid used for the M550ix differential is all that much different? Sure in the extreme it may be, but currently people are driving this car with MINERAL oil in the friggen differential (that is what the tell us is in the from the factory) so an "almost good enough" differential fluid has got to be better than that mineral oil (if that is even true).

Part of the reason for changing it is to get out any left over metal filings from the manufacturing process. Surely running the car with the "shitty" fluid used on the 550ix and 3series ix versions will be a better alternative than leaving the first oil in the thing with the metal filings or what ever is supposed to be removed with the first service.

And then read BS about warrantee issues if you don't get the 1200 mile service on time. That seams like a lot of BS, but how can you be sure?

I'd rather get the service done on time with an alternative fluid in the rear differential with the plan of continuing to 'go easy on the car' and wait for the correct fluid to be put in at a later date. That has got to be a better alternative. The cost is about $300 for both fluids (priced on ECStuning website) so it will not brake the bank. Hell, I'll pay for the 'cheap' fluid on the first go round and for the extra 30 minutes labor.

End Rant.

The G4 oil is synthetic while the G1, G2 and G3 are mineral.

G1 and G2 are equivalent to SAE 80W90
G3 and G4 are equivalent to SAE 75W90.

The oil used in the Differential on the M550ix is Redline Manual Transmission / Differential Fluid 75w90 - Mfg Part # 8352257904, ECS lists same oil for front and rear differential, perhaps someone can chime in and verify this BMW part number.

The product description for this item:

Red Line 75W90 gear oil is a great choice for a fluid service in many differentials and some manual transmissions.
The preferred lube for most car and light truck differentials, 75W90 is also used in many racing applications. Contains a special friction modifier for limited slip differentials; promotes synchro braking for smooth shifting, cold or hot.
Exceeds API GL-5.
Red Line MTL may be used in transmissions which recommend 75W, 80W, or 85W GL-4 gear oils, or SAE 30 or 5W/10W30 motor oils. If a 90W GL-4 or SAE 40, 10W40, or 15W40 is required, MT-90 may be used. If the transmission or transaxle requires an SAE 90 GL-5 gear oil, then Red Line 75W90NS or 75W140NS Gear Oil may be used.

So it seams to me that using the "lesser fluid" used in the M550ix would not be a problem. Now it comes down to some nit picking product brand name???

To be fair the sales person was good, and I’ve never had real issues with them in the past and I’ve been servicing cars there for 10+ years happily.

I hope this was just a couple of lazy employees rather than a dealership issue.

Was at dealer today, apparently some dealers pre purchased quantities of this fluid thinking they would be selling higher volumes of the M5's at their stores. We are trying to get 4 quarts from one such "hoarder dealer." He could not really comment on the possibility of using the product used in the M550ix system.

Just had mine done at Century West BMW in LA. They ordered the oil on Tuesday and serviced the car on Thursday. At least I think they did everything for the 1200 mile service...

Here is the service receipt:
