Disable JB4 Auto-clear
Hey all,
I have been trying to make sense of the threads on n54tech but I haven't found my answer. Is there a way to turn off auto-clear on the JB4? Best I have found is threads that state to select 1/3 to turn it on. When I go in and select 1 on the speedo it goes to 3 on the tach now. I tried moving the tach to 0 and paging off but it goes back to 3 when I come back. Reason I ask is I am currently only stage 1 and would like to have all the codes working so I can properly diagnose issues I am seeing (waterpump problems). Thanks in advance.

Man jwzimm, more issues? I believe I remember we both started modding at the same time - it seems as if you have had a few issues along the way, sorry to hear about it. Hopefully you get everything sorted.

Rahim is correct. 1/4 is off.
1/3 is auto clear and i believe is set on by default. so set speedo to 1 set tach to 4000 rpms exit/save jb4 is not set to disabled auto clear.

tach starts at 0, that's your map. speedo should be at 10 for map 1 (aka 0-1), 20 for map 2 (aka 0-2), etc hit the left up button, and speedo goes to 1. use the right buttons to select 40 on the tach (aka 1-4), then hit the left down button twice to exit programming. that should take care of it |

Thanks for the info guys!!
The JB4 documentation is clear as mud!! The cheat sheet for the JB4 settings has absolutely nothing listed for 1/3 and 1/4! I would think for something that costs as much as the JB4 there would be a complete users manual or full tip sheet for all settings. It appears to all be scattered across various threads here and on n54tech though. Very disappointing. The JB4 itself is a great product but without significant searching (and a fair amount of guessing) it is pretty useless and possibly a little dangerous.

Thanks Mike! Honestly I am a little concerned about the car. There is nothing specific I can put my finger on but have you ever had a car you just felt like was struggling? Mine gives me that impression on anything but the stock tune. Add to it the water pump starting to go and I have been seriously eyeballing selling this car and ordering an M3. $78k is a lot to swing though.

I am getting strange behavior from the radiator fan lately. In the morning when it is up to temperature the fan is speeding up and slowing down on a ~5 second cycle. It has never done that before. I checked the water temp with the gauge hijack and it is only around 190 so I assume I am not overheating. I would assume the fan would pick a speed and hold it rather than cycling on and off like it is. Also, just recently I had the fan come on pretty strong and stay on after a freeway drive. I pulled the code with the JB4 and I got code 0x377A which translates to "Coolant pump, shutdown: Pump blocked". With auto-clear on though it cleared the code after the restart.

Yeah, it is. It scares the crap out of me though as there is little to no warning to the user. From what I have read you get a Yellow overtemp warning followed almost immediately but a Red warning and an engine shutdown. If this happened on I-5 I could be in some serious shit.

I had the same waterpump symptoms as you - 1 week later the car shutdown while driving, followed by the yellow and red overheat warnings. You can try to scan for codes - sometimes you will be able to see 1 or 2 codes before the pump actually dies.

I got the BMW extended warranty specifically because of the water pump issues on these cars. It is covered and they will replace it so long as there are codes to support the warranty claim. If I start seeing more codes (after I turn off auto-clear) I am going to pull the JB4 off and get the code to set clean and then bring it in.

Yeah, I saw your thread. That is why I am wanting to turn auto-clear off. I might even just pull the JB4 off completely in anticipation of final failure. That way once it does happen I can bring it straight in to the dealer and the code(s) will be active in memory.
