Call me weird......but I am always constantly aware of my surroundings. I have like a 3ft imaginary bubble around me that I'm constantly guarding. Honestly it feels like a sixth sense now.

Habit I guess. But one thing we try to tell people we train in our classes is to always be aware of what's going on around you at all times.

Like the other evening I was running and some sketch on his bike was tormenting traffic. I just went by, but quickly observed how far my shadow was in front so I could tell how close he was if he followed any more than he did. He probably just didn't want to work that hard to catch me

I have to say, as the hearing declines this becomes much more difficult

You and me both. For me, it has to do with where I grew up. Born and raised NYC. Took public transportation to HS in what was a nasty neighborhood. Then worked in lower Manhattan. I never lost it. And it doesn't matter where I am, I am always on guard and aware of surroundings.

This is the only way to live if you plan on living in any environment. My dad taught me to always know where the exits are in a structure and be wary of everyone around you. You never know when it's going to pop off.

I too am in this club. I find it to be scary at times. My second wife used to draw my attention to my situational/environmental awareness. I've been this way since I was a teenager and first started studying Kenpo and Isshinryu then moved on to a little BJJ. Anytime I enter a room, I scan everything. I notice where everyone is located, their body position, then notice all the blunt objects in the room, where they are located in relation to everyone's head and how big/heavy or whether or not they are tethered. I was mugged/attacked when I was 12, started learning self defense shortly after.

The current girlfriend got a decent dose of this a few months back as we were standing in line at the grocery store. We had a couple of "undesirables" get a little too close to us and standing in a very weird position as we were in line. I mentioned to her quietly for her to move and let me hand her one the items so I had a free hand, then positioned myself to where I could drop both of them if needed. The guy to my left shoulder, at 45 degrees made a quick movement horsing around with the other guy; he had no clue how close to an ER visit he was. I restrained but slowly turned around and made what I call "Lion Eye Contact." The two guys, the girlfriend and everyone behind them in line, hell even myself got really nervous. Honestly I was just glad things didn't escalate. I know how to defend myself, but it still scares the shit out of me as you never know what the other person has on his person, what level of crazy they are or what blood-borne pathogens they may transporting around.
