I think we can see a theme here, no matter who is declared the winner in these comparison tests: the E63S has more character, and is in some sense more raw and exciting, while the M5 is more refined and is more "complete".

Yep. What a roll reversal.

not really. they literally drove on a road. and that was it. i don't think that was a proper "review".

the m5 won based on it's ability to hide its track capability and comfortable it is on a road, which is great. shows the dual personalities of the car. at the end of the day it is a preference decision, but i think if a track comparison was included the m5 would have edged the e63 a tiny bit more and increased the gap. just my thoughts.

Very nice comparo. There is no point in talking about track abilities. Although it is good to get a feel for these cars, they will be driven 99% of the time in the streets. And even with CCB and agressive tyres, these cars do not hold on well to repeated tracking sections, therefore I feel like the street comparison is more relevant. Nevertheless I can't wait until lap times come out. I think it will be pretty close. The E63 S has been said to have better steering feel and more accurate steering, while the M5 feels a little more athletic. I think there will be very little in it.

I know! It's crazy they took a couple of 2 tonne road cars and drove them, er on the road!

Reviewing road cars on the road to find out which is the best road car....whatever next!

The E63S has a Wagon version in the US which means it automatically wins for me. My plan is to hold onto my F31 Wagon for another 2 years and then buy an used E63S Wagon for a significant discount.

I think, fanboyism aside, whichever of the two you buy is a good buy.

i still dont get how people think the amg has more character in sound department. sure stock its louder but imo once the s63tu is freed of restrictions it sounds amazing. there is so much progression in its tone as it rpms build up. the amg just has one tone from idle to redline. both great cars i dont have bias towards bmw just think its overall better in every way but perhaps interior styling.

Does anyone know if AMG begins with a modified platform, as BMW does, versus the same platform with modifications. BMW M cars are usually only the unibody from the base car, and all the subframe, suspension, drivetrain, sheet metal, etc are basically all new for the M version.

It's an expensive route but makes a great car that you just can't duplicate with modifications to a base car (in the BMWs case)

these are not track cars nor will they be used as such no matter how well either company markets them... no one in their right mind wants to track 4200 lb 4 door luxury sedans

The main problem (in terms of daily driving) with the E63S is the stiff/harsh ride even in Comfort mode. The M5 is evidently better in that respect.

Honestly, I wouldn't get either one of them personally. Instead, I would get a comfortable daily driver plus a real sports car like a Porsche Cayman. It's possible to do that for similar money.

I've never understood the love of AMG noise, it's just a contrived farty blare from the exhaust that has no tonal change and not even the n/a 6.2 has any induction roar either.

he probably meant a 2-seater car that is better balanced for and more efficient on circuits.

but hey ... the m5 / e63s can do both well if you go on circuit 3-4 time a years...

That's the thing, M5 will be my daily and I also own a GT350. Probably will sell it in the next 6 months and either go for a Performante or a 488. That will make it a perfect combo in my book.

What a dull lifeless video. I couldn't make it 2 minutes into that snooze-fest.

I ran across F10’s on track precisely twice in the past 3-4 years: at NJMP and WGI. For some reason the example at WGI was overheating at the end of each session, and both were hard on the tires. Both driven at low-intermediate level, both were surprised they couldn’t keep up with an M3.

Meanwhile I encountered zero E63’s.

Not my first, second or third choice for a track car. But would make a fabulous, sinful, license endangering daily driver.

Well, the weight combined w the maintanence and wear on the tires / breaks makes these not very good track options. Now they are in addition auto... BMW knows this market well and they are playing to it perfectly...

Maybe back in 2001. The new M5 shares many elements from a standard 5-series. It's not only the frame as you make it seem.

What is shared? In the case of the M4, it shares almost nothing with the 435/440. Maybe a few interior controls, but not much more. The M5 may not follow the exact design philosophy, but likely quite close. Brakes, suspension, drivetrain, body panels, etc, etc are all M specific - although I think this time the V-8 has some commonality in structure, to your point. Not sure much else though?

Guys, keep in mind that this M5 can be fitted with the M Performance Exhaust for better sound!
