Wow here it is in plain English:

The new BMW M5 is said to weigh a colossal 2,435 kilograms (5,368 pounds). Almost 1000 pounds heavier than the F90 M5. Surely that can't be right?

More disappointing is that the horsepower is only 718 hp. That's not enough gain to justify the 1000 lbs and added complication.

Its confirmed. The new M5 is a gigantic porker and massive POS.

What a joke.

I was genuinely hoping BMW M wouldn't screw up, as AMG already has. I guess I was wrong.

So, at 5368 pounds, with only an additional 100 horsepower over the outgoing M5 F90, I don't think we're going to see any tangible improvements in acceleration. The old "standard" was 10 horsepower for every hundred pounds of body weight. This just makes it equal.

I posted this on the original one on BP but just so everyone here can see as well
Pounds per HP

“G90 M5 (718) 7.476
F90 M5C (617) 7.082
F10 M5 (553) 7.35
E60 M5 (500) 7.963

Some quoted weights jump around so these may not be 100% but gives you an idea of the M5 over the last 20ish years.”

Can’t wait for BMW to advertise the CS as the lightweight track version at 5200 lbs.

Also interesting how the m5 will now diverge from the x5m powertrain as that has the s68 in mild hybrid form rather than an electric motor system.

So if the sedan will only be 600lbs lighter than the XM, that means the touring which I assume will be 200lbs heavier, is only separated from the XM by 400lbs!! So the new M5 will weight as much as a current X5.

Silver lining is the engine SHOULD be very reliable, if rumors are true there is more forged components in the S68 and its now understressed by making nearly 50hp less than the outgoing S63. On the opposite side of coin this will be a test for the drivetrain, which I wonder if any of the XM folks can shed any light on how their vehicles been performing, probably good, I hardly see any soccer moms doing launches on their way to pick up the kids or the grocery store.

Another big silver lining is the production of the wagon will be for next 6 years and this isn't some limited production BS. With the market stabilizing and huge depreciation these cars take, I don't think i''ll be buying brand new this time. There is a lot of same year or one year, sub 5k miles M5s for 10 to 15k under. And wagons not being really popular in the US in general it'll be easy to snag one, and get extra warranty.

“ The twin-turbo 4.4-liter gasoline engine is said to be good for 577 hp and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) whereas the electric motor is rated at 194 hp and 280 Nm (207 lb-ft).”

Wouldn’t that be 771hp? Seems more plausible as it would reduce the lb/hp to 6.96. Either way I’m glad I picked up a 23 M5C before it got huge(r).

So the legendary E39 had the worst weight to horsepower ratio?

I see where you are going with this, i really hope the G90 is a fantastic car and the numbers do not tell the whole story.

E39 is about 4000 lbs and has about 400 hp so 10 lbs per hp. Earlier M5 had even lower power to weight ratios. E28 M5 was about 3400 lbs in US spec with about 260 hp so about 13 lbs per hp, though Euro weights were reported as low as 3150 lbs and power as high as about 280 hp. E34 M5 was about 3800 lbs with power ranging from about 310 hp to about 335 hp. You can do the math, but it’s obvious.

I figure my modded F90 M5 loaded non-Comp is 4350 lbs and makes 800 hp, or about 5.5 lbs per hp. Pretty good, but I’d like to get that a little lower with a custom stage 2 tune and then even lower with a built motor. Still won’t equal a Tesla Plaid but will have the right sounds. Maybe my next car will be electric.

The thing that annoys me also is why are they detuning the ice engine part? Like wtf? If anything they should be increasing the output. I just don’t get it. They intentionally are hamstringing the engine adding 1000 lbs more weight to an already heavy car and then only add back in 100hp? And call it good? I would love to hear the engineers rationale for this nonsense. Why not just refine the current engine add larger turbos etc etc bring up the hp 100 and leave the weight roughly the same and now we’re talking about a car with the correct performance we’re all looking for. What enthusiast really want. Not this battery powered heavy junk. Leave the batteries to the cars that are trying to be all those things for the people that want better gas mileage etc.

Both figures are “up to” .. so “up to 577hp” and “up to 194hp”. I guess that means they can’t both hit their peaks simultaneously.

I wondered the same but at the same time can’t imagine they simply match the XM output and have worse power to weight ratio than the outgoing f90. I suppose we will know soon enough.

BMW will likely release variants having more power after the base car is released. I think the car will perform well given BMW’s history. Only time will tell. On the bright side, maybe such a heavy car will force BMW to install a larger rear brake caliper and redesign the braking system that will eliminate brake noise.
