Yellow CEL, no idrive message

Bought the car new in October, and a few weeks later, there was a cold snap, and the CEL came up, with no idrive message, and no change in how the car drove or functioned. Went away when it warmed up a few days later.

Did it again a few days ago with this recent cold snap (I’m in northern NJ), and isn’t going away. It seems it’s related to the thermostat? Although the temp readings are normal, and the car warms up normally. In any case, has this happened to others? I found some threads where the same thing seemed to happen, but not sure what to do other than buying a tool to clear the code.

I wouldn’t mind it, but obviously with a CEL, remote start doesn’t work, and in near 0 temps, it’s when I need it most.

Any thoughts?

Could be as simple as not fully tightening the gas cap sometimes. But it would be best to use a higher level scan tool to pull the codes. You will then likely see a shadow code.

Very likely an emissions code with no idrive message. Got the same for me with "bank balance mismatch" years ago after running WOT on the track for a long time. Dealer pulled and fixed. Check codes as suggested.

Following up.

Got the code P04FC “Manufacturer Control”, which the tool refused to clear. The last time it happened, it was when ambient temps were below 40. It started warming up a bit the other day, and sure enough, it went away yesterday.

There’s a thread about folks getting non-iDrive CELs with Eventuri CF turbo inlets installed, which I have (not the intakes though), but last time was before I had these installed, so not sure they factor in.

What scan tool are you using? Maybe a higher level one would help zero in? Cold can cause issues. One code I started getting in late fall had to do with wastegates and boost reaching a limit. I have a tune and a JB4 controlling meth and adding boost on top of the tune. I gradually reduced the JB4 boost additive from 5 psi to 2.5 psi until the code stopped appearing. I will look into this at some point - there is probably a fix.

It’s a cheap one I got years ago for like $25 on Amazon. I was thinking maybe the same thing, like I just need a slightly more robust tool. Will give that a shot this weekend. Any recs?

I would get one with bmw specific software. Some download factory software but it can be complicated to use. The Foxwell NT510/520/530 are a good value in little hand held units and you get a free brand specific module when you register it. If you step up to a small tablet like an Autel 808, you must pay annual subscription costs — I think they are cloud based now.

I’ll give that Foxwell a shot, thank you!

I recently got this CEL with P04FC. Mods are bms stage 1, dinan turbo inlets, mad secondary dp and dinan x pipe. CEL was on for a day then suddenly went away by itself. Only change I can remember is filling up at a different gas station.

Likely related to the Dinan inlets — there were some bad batches that leaked. It’s a crankcase vent code.

in my case it was my Eventuri turbo inlets. i had one of the first batches and they apparently shipped with faulty exhaust gaskets that Eventuri replaced. once I popped the new gaskets in, the CEL never came back:
