If it wasn't my DD I would have gone with a used 911 myself, certainly a better financial choice as you could likely drive it for a couple years, sell it, and basically pay next to nothing in net carrying costs.

I went with the M8 for the DD because I didn't have the space for a third car. Much better ride and interior for longer or more casual trips than the 911, a little extra drama/excitement over the M5, and with the deals, it leased out cheaper than the M5 even though the MSRP was 25k more than a comparable car.

I'm also a bit of a BMW fanboy so I likely wouldn't have pulled the trigger on a P-car anyway. Having a dealer within walking distance of my house for service doesn't hurt either.

70/75 Maxx-- always preferred the 911 over boxter for some reason

The 911 is definitely the quintessential Porsche, although for your money you'll likely be able to find a lower mileage and more pristine example of a Boxster/Cayman from the 981 Generation and still get a fantastic NA Flat-6 and excellent driving dynamics. Definitely worth checking one out at least in my opinion. The Boxster being smaller, lighter, and its mid-engine layout still create a fun and special experience.

Compare that to the turbo torque of the two BMWs (and your current 550) and it will feel slllloooowwwww.

Based on the m8, I'm assuming your budget can push $90k. For that you can get a nice 991.2 vert and get the best of all worlds. The new small t turbo engines are great, they still rev like the old P-car engines, still have the flat 6 wail, but now have enough torque to get off the line with a push. The convertible is an engineering marvel. Its actually a fabric covered magnesium shell, so it's quiet like a hard top in the up position and keeps the clean coupe look. It folds in under 20 secs and with the built in wind deflector can be used top down in the high 40s F (not that you'd ever see it in Cali, but out east it extends the top down season by a couple months).

Best of all, you can get the 911 w. a true manual if you search hard enough. At least that's what I did.
even if m8 is 1k+ pounds heavier??
911 has the sport exhaust vs m8 base non comp--- which will be louder and are you happy you made the Porsche decision?

I went with the m8 because of the lease pricing.

If you are buying the 911 is not just the best financial choice but the best car.
