Hello everyone, I'm looking to buy my next car within the next 6 months. Lurking on this forum for the past 6 months has shown me that plenty of you have probably already experienced the cars I'm looking at and I would like your opinion on the matter.

A little background on myself before we get started - I own a 1994 3000GT VR4 that I've had since I was 17. It's went through a few builds since I've had it but is now almost running again with a billet 3.7L stroker and precision 7675, should be well over 1000awhp and not a single bolt has been overlooked as far as refreshing/restoring the car.

After a lot of DDs, a few years ago I bought an 08 335i. I had never owned anything other than Japanese cars before this, but was instantly hooked. My wife even got a 135is a little afterwards. I kept that car for 2-3 years, upgraded turbos, did all maintenance and preventive maintenance. The car made about 500 on pump 93 and never left me stranded. It was a fun car but I didn't want to spend the money getting to the next level in it, and when I took it to the track I snapped an axle. I decided to sell it to aquire a car I've wanted for a long time - a 1999 3000GT VR4, they only made 287 in this last year of production.

So here we are a few years later. My buddy that I sold my 335i to (then he had an unfortunate accident totaling the car) moved back in state and bought a e90 M3. I made the mistake of riding with him and was lusting to own another BMW once again, this time an M car - but I have a high standard on what I want next which is what we will get into shortly.

I had decided that an F10 M5 or F12 M6 looked like what I wanted to get into next but after talking to some people with them, I started hardcore looking at and researching F90 M5/M5Cs for the past 6 months. My old boss bought a 21 M5C and I went look at it in person. It looked like the F90 M5 was going to be my next car. However, my wife saw it and knew I was looking for one, got the itch herself, and traded her 135is on a beautiful F80 M3 and after driving it, I started to question myself. Now I don't want a F80/82 myself since we all know how they sound with exhaust - the new equal length stuff is better but not what I'm looking for.

What I'm looking for is this: Something that's very nice inside and out. Comfortable enough to daily-ish, but won't do terribly on a track day or two a year. A nice sound system from the factory and a nice exhaust note when modified. Something that has presence. Something that I won't get bored of and sell in 2 years. 80-90k range with some flexibility. I realize that I'm picky and I probably won't get everything I want, especially because: No Merc, no P cars, No American cars. Here are some I was looking at, feel free to add

18-19 M5C-
fast
sounds good with exhaust
techy
new
CONS-
don't need a 4 door car
afraid it will feel too big
not sure how well it will feel tracking
it's a 5 series unless "you're an industrial strength class one oceangoer car bore" (lacks presence??)
reliability when modded after years and higher miles

R8 V10-
has a v10
look nice
stands out for sure
CONS-
gen 1 is the only one in my price range(?) and I can't stand the interior

14-15 V12 Vantage S or Vanquish-
seems to check every box for me except...
CONS-
not that techy/radio displays seems tiny and kind of finicky

E92 M3-
check most of the boxes for me
more affordable than others on the list
shifting at 8k is awesome
exhaust note is awesome
CONS-
might seem TOO familiar (335i)
doesn't have the presence of the other cars on this list

MP4-12-
seems like another winner but reliability seems more miss than hit?

F430-
don't know much about this one, never really been a Ferrari guy, seems like a couple are in my price range but a little dated with tech?

Thanks for reading, thanks in advance, Merry Christmas!

Well, you are all over the place with your shopping list

I would go with a V10 R8 from that list if you don't need the back seats. Second gen if possible.

But word of warning, the M5 is faster than all your list, except the Mclaren

Yea I know the list is all over the place. It's because my dealer was like "what about _______"

I know the M5 is the fastest, but fastest isn't exactly the goal. I had a feeling the R8 would be highly recommended here as most seem to have one haha.

My vote would be either for the R8 (preferably V10) or the V12 Vantage, or the E92 if you want to save some $$$.

From that list I would take the M5 hands down. Far superior interior, sound and power. More reliable and lower cost to operate. Good luck !

He should go for a two door older fully depreciated car he can modify and tinker with. Then when he gets bored with it, move on to another car to tinker with and modify. Maybe an older M3 coupe, an M6 or old M8 from the 90's. There are also the old Mercedes E53 coupes.

About a year ago I would have agreed, but my desire to tinker has gone down, especially since I have three cars that will keep me plenty occupied in that department. Something that I can put exhaust, intake, and tune, can be quiet or loud when I want, and be comfortable, not rattle, and good sound system is appealing to me more now - or else I would expand my 90s collection and get an FD RX7 lol

@iron_man I know we've talked about this a few times but, opinions now that you've owned yours for a few months?

You are certainly all over the place with options. Loved my e92. Miss it. You can get one in great shape with low miles for under 25k. Go for it.
