M5 vs modded Maxima?

So this happened yesterday. I was cruising home from the office, and this older dude in a newer (2019+) Nissan Maxima came screaming up behind me. I'm not sure what all he had done to the car, but it def wasn't stock. If I had to put a sound to it, I'd say it sounded like a GTR. Well, he got beside me and kept lunging forward (around 50 MPH). After the 3rd time of this I let him get about a half car length on me, and dropped the hammer. Well, as I expected I pulled away from him with ease, but what surprised me was that I didn't pull away from him as fast as I thought I should. This went on for about another 5 times until I guess he got tired of losing, and pulled off. However, this got me wondering, what could he have done to a Maxima to hang with an M5 like he did? ¯\_(O_o)_/¯ I have been google'ing all morning trying to find anything on these cars being modded, but couldn't find anything.

I'm not sure about maximas, but infinity cars from the same year are very tunable, and a buddy of mine has one with JB4 and it is a quick car. Not sure if maxima shares the same engine.

I believe it's the same engine as in the 350Z (at least as a base), which is very tunable via forced induction additions. Not sure how this guy should feel about the whole situation. Probably pretty pumped that he's hanging with the M5, but also a bit frustrated given that he's likely spent a bunch of time and money (and definitely voided any warranty) to really only get a good look at your taillights hahaha.

I am not privy to all the details but there are so many more chances on a regular road due to conditions, mods, driver, first jump, right gear, etc for a lesser car to hold its own. Plus Im sure the speeds werent enough to truly allow for bus lengths to occur.

Or maybe it was that new MaxGTR?

LOL, fair enough. While I can't comment on the other dude's setup, I can on mine and the road conditions. We were on the toll road in Austin on a flat smooth stretch. I was in SportPlus all the way around and in D3. Like I said, I pulled him each time, but didn't run it past 100. Just a little surprised by the whole thing, that's all.

I find this very funny because I used to be a maxima guy and I can tell you that they are pretty quick for such a heavy front wheel drive vehicle. I don't know much about the new generations but the 02-03 was and still is my favorite maxima ever... a lot of Z's and Infiniti's as well as other vehicles got caught off guard.

😆

Maybe I'm just a dick but a Maxima wouldn't be worth a glance let alone showing him some power.

They don’t even use the 3.7 v6 but the older 3.5....

That's fine that you feel that way but it was and will always be a great car to me.. humble beginnings and I will never forget where I came from.

Sidebar: Funny thing the last guy that sounded like you got dismantled buy my 03 maxima FBO on the hit (75 shot) and he was driving a hemi 06 charger that needed god himself to come down and help the poor thing 🤣..

Back when I thought Maximas was the fastest thing ever lol...*sighs* good times

That doesn't mean you were going to try to flex on a friggin 600hp super car. GTFO.

Pretty sure the "last guy like me" and his 340 horses is apples and oranges compared to the M5.

My car in college was a 1998 Maxima SE. Maxima's used to be awesome before Nissan completely fukked it up starting with the 2000 redesign. Off topic but that car still evokes good memories.

I had a 350z back in the day that ran the 3.5 engine. Like many have said, it is extremely tunable and installing your own single turbo isn't hard. I put a single turbo from Momentum Engineering (out of business) and got it to 480 at the wheels without much effort. Rolling races were great, getting traction from a dig wasn't.
