Oil/Filter change and protective oil cooler guard installed.

Oil change time, so took the time to install the oil cooler guard.

Pretty straight forward and hopefully offers protection.

This doesn’t look like it is sturdy enough to take much of a hit.

does not take much of a hit to damage the radiator, but at least it can deflect a bit. The other brand was more rigid but had large rectangular openings. It's better than nothing, I guess.

Looks like more complete coverage than the others. The others I have seen have large openings.

Yes, some people add screen to the aluminum or steel plate guards. Are we looking for skid plates or a mesh or screen strong enough to deflect or spread out the force of small road debris?

I believe the latter should be the goal to protect the cooler.

question: Who has had their fancy oil filter socket get stuck on the oil filter housing? It's a pain but there must be a better way.....The tolerance on the filter socket is not great. Its a little too big so it slips past the notches. (same for others I have used on other cars). I can get it off but would rather not have it get stuck particularly when I am putting the housing back on.

Yup yup. One advantage of the aftermarket aluminum ones.

I was looking at those before, when I realized that my car did not have the drain in the oil filter housing like the prior V10 M5 did, that drain is epic, makes it much less of a mess.

Now I stuff towels up around the opening before loosening the housing because there is about a quart of oil in that thing. Dumb that they dropped the drainable one. Wonder if they're were having a problem with leaks??

Appreciate the review, I’m going to be getting this and the outer auxiliary radiator covers shortly. After having my center one punctured by a rock, not taking any chances.

I have the Zunsport grills for my Boxster's radiators and they are great for protection all around (side intakes also) but they don't yet make a set up for the M5's intakes (for the intercoolers). They asked if I wanted to make a template for them. LOL.

I took a rock to my RS6 intercooler, was a small leak but I had it replaced during a timing belt service (no a lot more cost due to the 'service position' cost as part of the timing belt job) but the intercooler was $700. I have been aware of this issue for some time.

The first time I read about an engine being killed due to an oil leak from the oil cooler I was shocked. BMW engineering? really?

Probably trying to save a buck and the techs complained enough they went back to it. I would imagine if you always replace seals and use proper torque specifications you should be ok.

Just ordered one for the oil cooler. And They’re website shows grills for the front bumper for the M5. What radiators are you talking about if not these?
I don’t like the look on top of the oem plastic honeycomb. I wouldn’t mind it if it was behind the honeycomb. Would keep leaves out of there too!

The leaves in there drive me insane. I'd do it just for that if not for any actual protection.

Just adding to the fray.

I am doing an oil change on our Sienna tomorrow.......

So I bought the tool I need to do it.

Here....

See anything interesting???

Begin Rant::::;

Well do ya? BMW YOU HAVE YOUR HEAD UP YOUR ASS? That 'tool' for the BMW slips and gets stuck because the tolerance on the plastic cover and the metal tool are not close enough. It's a pain in the (&)*&*&) to remove once it's stuck on the housing. Toyota has a positive NOTCH on their METAL housing. Not that difficult of an idea. And the Sienna still has the drain plug and you use a plug-in plastic sleeve to drain the housing before removing it. Nice.

End Rant:

Of course McLaren engineering is superior. No one likes a sticky tool. Pics of Senna or ban.
