The reviewer said it's difficult to consistently launch, whereas the 8 goes perfect every time. Not sure if that's tires, weather, driver error or what but it paints the 8 in a better light than the 5 IMO.

Regarding the looks, to me the M5 does a better job at straddling the dual line between luxury sedan and brutish sports car. I've always loved how the M5 was the subtle refinement in looks of the 5-series M Sport but with double or triple the firepower. Those are the categories that to this day make it the perfect one car for me.

The M8 seems like it can't forget that it was an M6 a generation ago. If you look at the price point and see what else you can get for it, it's a total bargain. But if you scale it back and compare it to the M5, I find it hard to justify.

The M8 is hot. M5 is a handsome car but most people get them in black/white/grey so it looks like a normal BMW.

Anyhow, both of these are absolute boats.

I think it's a mix. Extremely high price, depreciation is terrible, SUV craze, general collapse of this segment, and the existence of other competitors at a similar price (S coupe, 911, AMG GT, Vantage, R8, Lexus LC). I know the S coupe and Lexus have struggled too.

For the most part BMW got the product right. I personally find the interior design a little underwhelming but that's it.

Do you honestly believe that they develop a different transmission line for these cars? Would they be that stupid in Munich?

Not at all, but I think there's a possibility it's software related.

M5

This evidence is not based on any objective information whatsoever. Just a better looking car, and it's more BMW-ish.

The new styling is not a step in the right direction. Of course, this is all subjective and will respect as such, but if the new 4-er is any indication... Ew...

Seems like a recurring theme ... very weird. The M8 seems to explode off the line every time. So impressive.

M5 is a great looking car. I loved my M6 GC CP. the M8 definitely takes the win for most aggressive looking bad@$$, IMO.

I love both and if I'm buying a new one, the premium of the M8 (would be a GC for me) just isn't justifiable to me. Although when the day comes, I guess we'll see. You'd be a fool for thinking there's a wrong choice here.

m8 over m5 anyday although most can not justify the price difference and want to feel better about there purchase of the m5....

but i must say the 8 aint all that either, not like the m6 gc vs f10 m5 where the 6 wins no discussion..

I personally like the M more. However, I think that being objective, the F90 has better acceleration than the previous one. So the F90 would do better in a race. Yesterday I saw a movie4k where an M8 was and I was fascinated.

The 8 is made to look low and wide with sports car proportions albeit heavy. The 5 is made primarily to be a practical large four door sedan. Visually, the M version just changes the plastic bumpers and adds some flair. The 8 was designed to look cool first, be practical last.

I'll admit looks are subjective, but I've found the last two 5 series to be nothing more than what they were designed to be, executive sedans. The E60 was the last time BMW attempted to be bold whether you liked it or not. The F10 and G30 are handsome but just regular looking BMW sedans. The M5 versions look cool, but I'm not sure how anyone can begin to compare them to a low slung M8.

When I first saw the M8 in photos I wasn't sold. But after seeing them on the road, I completely forgot about the M6. The M8 just look so good. Not garish like the new 4 series, just clean, modern, mean, and excellent proportions. The M6 now looks two generations old compared to the M8.

A person that drives F90 M5 concluded that he preferred an M5 over M8. Any surprise there?

All reviews have shown M8 to be faster and launches better than M5

And M8 coupe has far more road presence than M5. It is a car that looks better on road than in showrooms. You would always do a double take when one passes you on the road especially in white or exotic grey. It is a car that announces I am special BMW unlike M5.

Sedan always looks outdated in few years unless you are an enthusiast who knows what an M5 is. M5 does not command that attention on road and would look outdated and bloated in few years to ordinary eyes

If money is no object and I can afford to have two fast cars (a coupe and practical sedan), I would surely take the M8. If I could afford only one, I would take an M5

However to say, M5 has more road presence than M8 is not true.

I went for the M5 because I wanted the fastest 4 door sedan there is.

If I wanted the fastest 2 door that would not be the M8.

The higher the badge number the more people care about how new the styling is and not looking dated. I guess that's what happens when you have no taste.

Nice video.

At the price range both of these cars command, the right car is the one the buyer prefers.

Constant depreciation and occasional X5M envy will be the norm after purchase.
