Cracked windshield

My windshield on my 2019 M5 cracked and need a new one. There is no impact point or any proof of a rock chip that one usually sees but bmw is saying that windshields do not crack on their own so I must have hit something :

For those of you who have replaced windshields how is the insurance work or should I just eat it and pay the $3k for a new bmw windshield. I have the HUD.

um.... insurance? i only pay $100 for comprehensive.

just make sure to say rock hit directly off from the truck you were following.

(correct me if im wrong, some insurance is really finicky about whether rock hit the ground first and bounced back to the windshield or it hit directly off the truck etc)

The top of the windshield seems to be a weak point in our M5s.

My first windshield cracked from the top, dead center, and doing an inverted Y around the cameras to extend on each side about halfway height.

I got it replaced and less than 1 month later, another crack from the top, passenger side, exactly like your photo.

I didn’t get any rock either for both of them.

For both occurrences, it happened while I was doing HPDE at the track, in between sessions.

What I find somewhat strange is that there is absolutely no protection at the very top of the windshield, like a small rubber strip to protect that very sharp edge.

My insurance is pay the deductible, they handle the rest. Happened on my G30. HUD as well along with ACC. Make sure you ask where you can have it done as the HUD and ACC are finicky. I had them pay for it at my dealer.

No sense paying out of pocket if you don't have to. My insurance is USAA in CA. When I lived in SC there was no deductible because of the shitty roads. So it's state dependent as well.

Wow.
I have a small crack from a rock that I had repaired but I need to replace the windshield. Been putting it off because I'm worried they will f*** it up.
Insurance says I have to pay up front, then they will reimburse me less the deductible.

Always handled as comprehensive. Never had a carrier question it, as long as glass is the only damage.

File the claim OP, won’t affect your rates either.

Filed my claim today. They want a third party to handle the glass and and calibration which worries me but I'll go along with it

I have had three windshields, make that four, replaced in the past 40 years of driving and the insurance company not once asked me how it happened. If you have glass coverage it does not matter. They will pay.

Keep in mind the TWO sensors may need to be replaced but they should be reusable if carefully removed. Don't count on the glass guy to be that careful, TAKE THEM OUT FOR YOURSELF FIRST. For old school set ups, prior to ?2005/6/7 don't know, the sensor is GLUED to the window with a pad that is sticky on both sides. These are hard to find from what I gather, odd item. The new ones are not glued in place they are held by a clip system. I had to replace the sensor for my Heads Up Display (it's the sensor on the right of the rearview mirror) after my repair. They put the wrong part number item in (the dealer replaced it again and go the part wrong a second time LMAO, claimed Box had one number but part was wrong). I bought the sensor from my local dealer after carefully confirming the part number, and it was a VERY quick DIY since this windshield comes with the mount and padding and does not have to be glued to the sensor, it snaps in and is fine.)

I am on my 4 th windshield on 2 years of ownership
All 3 cracked within 1 month of each other and within a time frame of 6 months. The insurance company thought I was playing with them

After u replace it u should get clearplex. Its like clear bra but for your windshield and comes with a 24 month warranty against a cracked windshield.

You WIN! I'm on the third one. The first cracked windshield happened within the first 3 months after I got the car. Then the second one happened a week after it had been replaced... It has been a year since the last replacement.

I also had a crappy experience with the insurance company because they all subcontract to SafeLite and I was not about to let them touch my brand new M5. I went back to the BMW dealer and then SafeLite wanted to take up to 6 months to pay me back. Now my insurance is trying to charge me over 35% more to renew the policy on the car...

I do LOVE the darn car though!! What a machine!!!

My M5s windshield is still ok and didn't have to change it yet tho the M4s windshield cracked once on the Autobahn and BMW changed and insurance paid for the whole amount, i had to pay the Deductible and it was like 100 dollars .

i really wanted to advise you to check how the Head up display will look like after they replace the windshield as sometimes it will look different/bad after. happened to a friend of mine and they had to replace it again.

Use CCR 3365.1 to get OEM windshield installed by dealer

You appear to be in California. Although it can be a challenge, you can use California Code of Regulations 16 CCR 3365.1 to persuade your insurer to pay for dealer-installed OEM windshield, as I did for my F10 a couple years ago.

GEICO wanted me to use a Chinese-made knockoff glass installed by Safelite for $600. There are visible differences in the material and differences in the installation method compared to OEM, which unfortunately prices out closer to $2900. I had to do alot of arm twisting but the law is the law, regardless of how many companies and suppliers in California are in non-compliance.

Good luck.

I went through insurance and had the OEM glass replaced at my local BMW dealer. I had to insist on OEM glass with insurance, but since the car was so new, they didn't put up a fight. Some have said that once the new windshield is installed that all the connected drive, HUD and other sensors around the windshield need to be reprogrammed, but I've read other reports that say all those electronics are self correcting/leveling and don't need to be reprogrammed. So in the end...I'm not sure which is the correct way.

I paid $250 deductible and just had insurance pay the dealership the rest. I think it was about $2200 all in for me last year (live in Texas).

So what the insurance is doing is having a third party come to my house and replace the glass and related parts with new BMW parts then sending it to my dealer for calibration which they are paying for. Guess it's cheaper for the insurance that way and my dealer can make sure they did the job correctly

What's with all these cracked windshields?

I never have anybody in front of me for too long.

We have $0 deductible glass coverage in South Carolina by law. I had to get the windshield replaced on my S63 AMG and it was nearly $3000. Insurance covered it, no questions. OEM glass. Replaced at the Mercedes dealer.

If you have the HUD, then you need special glass for that. You will have to insist on OEM glass.

That probably works out fine. Some would argue those windshield replacement companies (I've had a few experiences with Safellite and they've always done a good job) will do a better job than a BMW dealer on replacing the glass because they do it so may times (many more times than a BMW dealership). Hope it turns out well!

I'm with travelers and they covered it, they wanted to pay for OEM, but I argued with them that M5 is a rare and especial car and doesn't have OEM windshield. They paid for the original Bmw part, they also paid for calibration for the sensors to dealership
BTW the original Bmw windshield was quoted around $1400
I had 1000 deductible, but at the end it was worth it
