Interesting Details/Quirks About the F90

So after having some time behind the wheel, there's been little things I've picked up on which aren't obvious at first. Wanted to start a thread so others can share things they may have figured out after playing around with the car too...

I've noticed that in manual mode from a stop, you can shift into 2nd gear before actually moving. Kinda nice to get a smoother start when driving more casually.

I've also noticed plastic air scoops behind the rear tires... Not exactly sure what those do.

Most automatics with a manual mode allow this. With modern traction control systems and such I'm not really sure it's necessary, but I guess it's just software so it's easy to do.

My X5M did not do this, so it was a nice added feature.

Also noticed, press the TRACTION OFF button to the left of the shifter, and then long hold the TRACTION OFF button, you can change the AWD system quickly from AWD to RWD without having to fiddle with a bunch of different menus. It lets you access the M xDrive configuration menu basically.

Ok, this is interesting to me, not that I expect to use RWD all that much.

Locking out your key fob in the car is possible using the BMW connected app. I was at the dealer doing my walk through and we had just paired my phone to the car and downloaded the app, enabled access, etc. We then get out of the car and he says the app has a cool feature that can lock your car if you, say, walk to a restaurant and have forgot to lock the vehicle. Then he says “ try it” as we are standing outside the car. So I do. Car locks. Cool. Then we realize both the key fobs are sitting in the centre console. Car dash is still lit up but now I can’t unlock the car as there is no “unlock” function on the app ( remote lock function but no unlock due to security reason they said ). So we end up having to call BMW Assist to do a remote car unlock on the vehicle - which even took longer than usual since I forgot the damn password for my account that had been opened literally 5 minutes earlier. I would usually never have both fobs sitting in the car except of course on this occasion I had all the documentation (and fobs) sitting inside the vehicle as we were doing the vehicle walk through! Moral of the story - if using remote lock on the BMW connected app make sure you know the location of your frickin fob.

My ‘06 550i in regular “D” drive move always starts out in 2nd. I never liked that “feature.” So, I automatically put it into “DS” drive-sport mode then “slap” it back into Drive-mode once on a highway and going above 50 mph.

Not the same with the F90 - I like it starting in 1st. But, I still have an urge slap the knob in DS mode. Habits are are to die... I still find myself reaching in my pocket for the key fob to unlock the car when approaching.

Ventilation or cooling of the lithium/ion battery.

You can adjust the rpm settings for launch control with the cruise control dial while activated.

Same here on reaching for the key fob. Another bad habit I need to correct is touching the door handle to “unlock” the car when in fact me approaching the car with key fob in pocket unlocks it and my touching the door handle the way I do locks the damn thing back up....

I believe the plastic air scoops behind the rear wheels are air ports for the rear diffuser that help balance the airflow coming out the back. I don't think it's for cooling of anything.

"The F90 is equipped with a lithium-ion battery for the voltage supply. Due to the packaging-space- based positioning of the lithium-ion battery between the rear axle differential and the rear silencer in the luggage compartment, a cooling channel has been implemented."

Is that channel specifically that airport though? Or are you inferring that to be the case?

When in manual shift mode you can be in 8th on the highway and put your foot to the floor...once you tap down shift (once) on the paddles or the console shifter you will go straight to the lowest acceptable gear. Just be prepared to shift again manually quickly before you hit redline.

This works on all current BMWs including standard ZF transmissions and DCT

My "old" M135i xDrive with the ZF 8HP had this also... now I wonder... when doing a 0-60 run in manual... how are the times starting from 2nd gear instead of 1st🤔

While there is one YouTube video mentioning this, I believe this is not true based on other forum member's feedback.

Not sure if this is obvious, but like the radio presets with the M1 and M2 buttons. First make all of the setting changes with suspension, engine, transmission, and steering. Then long hold on either M1 or M2 to save these settings. No need to go through the menus to make the changes to either preset!

Keep touching the door handle where you lock the car and the windows will roll up if they're down and the car will lock. I actually love this and use it a lot since I like driving with my windows down.
