I chose the Base model because I mainly didn’t see the enhanced benefits for the extra cost. Plus, the roads where I live live aren’t the best (nor are they overly bad - the constant FL sun causes havoc) and since I’ve driving my 2006 E60 550i for many years, I so used to a fairly comfortably ride with plenty of power when needed.

I can honestly say that if my dealer had given me the choice of either car, for the price of the base, I'd still pick the base. It just ticks the boxes better for me than the comp, both cosmetically and dynamically. I lean more to traditionally classic styling, and all the shiny black bits on the comp don't work for me. In regards to handling, I've got my suspension in sport, and it fits me perfectly.

One takeaway from all I've read so far, is that the owners of both the base and the comp, seem happy with the choices they've made.

Both are great cars, so just pick the one that ticks YOUR boxes.

Less than a 3% bump in HP accompanied by a harsher ride. No thanks. I'm happy with my base.

If I could buy base with wheels and ride height of the comp (from factory) I probably would.

Absolutely this! The thing is... the set with the comp. rims, rubber and sensors costs almost as much as the competition package.

It all depends on where you live street conditions and what you consider a harsh ride. Coming from an AMG ? Well the comp m5 will feel like a Buick in terms of comfort. It's all subjective.

On the speed side. Get a RaceChip tune and the comp model will be in the rear view fast
Great point about an AMG. They're quite harsh compared to their M-alternatives

I bought my M5 base for long drives, not commuting or townie use. In 9 months I’ve amassed 1,300 miles because winter prevented driving (no winter shoes) and I haven’t been able to get it out much this spring. And I had to force some of those miles to get to break-in.

Anyway I wanted the base for GT driving. I’m talking trips of 500 miles plus, one way, touring the country, that sort of thing. No need for Comp for that use, just point and squirt and enjoy the ride.

I admit to some comp-envy, however!

I love my M5 Comp. Drove both...couldn't tell much of a difference. I chose the Comp b/c I liked the wheels, M Sport exhaust and lower springs over the base M5. I've since dropped the car further on H&R springs. If I had to do it all over again, I'd probably look for a M5 first edition (which has the M Sport exhaust), add the H&R springs and be done with it. I really like the frozen red paint with the all black 706M wheels.

I dont think the 17bhp or so, will even be felt in the real world, and wont feel any slower as the torque is the same ?. Any thoughts ?
I had a drive out today in the Comp and a few people commented on the car and asked what you get for the few grand extra, and when you think about it, the forged wheels, better exhaust sounds better engine mounts stiffer ARB's and a power hike, Black grills /mirror caps.IMO it's a no brainer as you can with a push buy one for base money as I did, I payed £78K for my fully loaded M5 CP, less money than I payed for the base car last year.............i love it and so did the guys that saw it.

Could be variance or could be a tad softer suspension in the rear helps the rear tires grip a tad easier. I was at an AMG driving event and the instructors told us to put the cars in comfort mode vs. sport to allow the rear to "squat" a tad more at launch to help load the rear tires. But I think we are splitting hairs here.

I have the non-comp and couldn't be happier. Not once have I wished my car was stiffer. I do like the comp wheels and the black bits, but that can always be added.

I believe Car and Driver attributed the faster 0-60 time of the M5 base to having Michelin PS4+ tires vs. the Comp edition which had Pirellis. I'd need to go back and look through the reviews, but I'm almost positive that was the reason they cited.

If you plan to drive you M5 in the winter and you live where it goes down (sometimes) to -30c driving on packed snow / ice, the non comp is your only option. Couldn't be happier with my non comp, a true DD.

Why is that? Ground clearance? Or the Comp isn't supposed to be driven in temps below -30C?

Had a base F10 and will get a base F90 if I don’t wind up getting the Z4 M40i. Yes, I’m considering both.

Also waiting for the answer to your question... hard to imagine that the ride height makes such a difference.

The Comp. model is not offered in Korea (yet) so my decision was pretty straight forward.
