Exclamation You might want to check your Bowers & Wilkins

Hello fellow F90 owners!

So apparently I have recently find another widespread issue that affects F90 and G30 equipped with B&W sound system.

For those who have it, you will probably agree that its definitely not the best high end stereo (especially compared to B&O) and it can get even worse if you mid speakers will stop playing. And you better check yours, if your car is 2020 and older

Circled is the MID frequency speaker.

So what happens? Water gets inside the door panel and drips on the open important part of the speaker, such its magnet and wiring.

Traces of water and dirt inside the door panel when the speaker is removed. Speaker magnet and wiring is affected by all of this.

You can see actual water inside the speaker that was just removed from the car.

Overtime, it will damage it and your speaker will stop playing. Car won't get you any codes and it's actually hard to notice sometimes because the speaker will star loosing it sound gradually. The best way to test is to change output to specific side through equalizer. If the speaker is good, you will HEAR IT playing. If in doubt you can compare to rear doors.

It mainly happens with the front doors on both sides, however I had a car that required rear ones to be changed as well. Speaker are not cheap at around $200 each and requires door trim removal to be changed and you also need to change all of the door panel clips ones you pulled it.

So after some testing I did create special cover that protect pins, magnet and wiring of the speaker. It sits nicely inside the door panel and gives the speaker extra protection from water that drips on it. And it doesn't affect the sound.

It sits nicely with the speaker installed and looks OEM.

I plan do a repair kit, that will include speaker, door clips, speaker cover at very reasonable price.

In the meantime, you can check if your MID speakers are actually working

BTW, for whatever reason, it doesn't seem to happen with the cars that are equipped with Harmon & Kardon speakers.

Not all cars affected by this. It can happen the older your car get.

I read this article about a week ago and found it interesting. Last night as I drove home from work, I noticed that my BW system sounded weak. Most of the sound came from the dashboard speaker and reminded me of this article. I switched the fade to the driver side and sure enough, my speaker is out compared to the passenger and rear doors. The led is still working, but not the speaker.

Can I purchase the special cover? My warranty will cover the speaker but I would like the cover to prevent it from happening again.

This is exactly what seems to be happening to my '19. Just started noticing last week the driver mid stopped working. Then worked for a few days this week and went out again this morning.
I have been testing left and right and definitely the left mid comes and goes.

Thanks for the heads up. Let me know when the kit is ready.

I thought it was because I had cranked up Floyd's 'comfortably numb' guitar solo too loud. lol

Thanks.
Does the door panel need to come off or can the grill just be removed?
It looks like from the website link that just the grill can be removed.

Unfortunately no, you need to remove the whole door panel.

EXACTLY THIS HAPPENED TO ME 2 months ago!
I lost ALLLL mid range sound….even in the rear. My fear was the amp over heated and fried. I drive a 2018 and at 45k miles, luckily I still have extended warranty thru Zuirch.
BMW had to replace my amp and all mid range speakers…bill came to $6400. Luckily I paid my $200 deductible and back In business.

The front was affected the most. 100%
But all my mids were suffering. It sounded horrific.

This thread is a perfect example of why I love forums. I learned about a problem I didn't even know I have.

So refreshing compared to yet another "What's your M1 and M2 setting?" or "Will this tune screw up my warranty?" thread.

Thank you, hookson

Are there issues with this in the post LCI F90’s? Sounds like not an issue yet but maybe as time goes on?

Wow for shits and giggles i just remembered to check and voila, no sound out of either side speaker. Besides just paying 4K for upper cat replacements and 4 02 sensors last month on a 2019 with 39K miles i am flabbergasted. Also found the stupid rattle in the roof liner with the loose screw inside the light. Had 3 Audi's before and wanted to try something different. A8L, S6, S8 and the qualilty of Audi is vastly superior based on the couple hundred thousand miles i put on the 3.

Not acceptable in a car at this price point and of course my warranty ran out mid way thru the year.

Checked my speakers a few days ago, and all are crystal clear. No problems after almost three years of ownership.

Why did you need 2 primary cats and 4 O2 sensors at 5 years and 39k miles? Did you buy the car used? If so, I’d guess the previous owner ran catless downpipes and was a hack mechanic or used a hack mechanic. If you have owned the car since new, I am at a loss as to why or how you would need those parts.

Said the cats were not flowing freely and the 02's had residue. I did admit i ran fuel injector cleaner frequently and that is a no no i guess. I run only 93 gas thru it.

Early failure of catalytic converters is usually a symptom of a problem. Especially when combined with oxygen sensor residue. Why did you feel you needed to add injector cleaner? I would be surprised if that alone would cause damage to the converters unless you was using it very frequently and large amounts.
