So did they clarify if you are getting a new or refurbished engine? I might have missed that.

And that's another great example of why you shouldn't buy the first model year of new tech/engineering/automotive.

It's always better to wait for the MFG to work out the kinks before jumping in.

12 motors. That equates to 8 am to about 2 pm on that production line. Too many beers the night before assembly for that tech. Carry on

Would you rather they keep quiet and let those 8 people suffer? surely 8 cars that were delivered so far wouldn't warrant a recall in the future. Production issues happen. Whatever the issue was, they caught it and are rectifying it.

I'm sure if one of those 8 customers puts up enough of a stink, they can get something out of it, bet it a trade-in or extended warranty for free.

However in Illinois, if Car is out of service (it is currently) for 30+ days, it can be easily lemon lawed. As long as it is red tagged, the timer is ticking. Of course, BMW NA knows this as well. Just keep detailed records.

As an aside, as only 12 Vehicles were affected (and as witnessed by posters in this thread, others were not) I wonder if it had anything to do with options on the car
As for the options on the car, here is the window sticker:

By my count, there were 527 M5 produced for BMW NA between these dates

VIN B283973 - B284498

Even more interesting that only 12 of these are subject to the recall.

There clearly are no options on your car that would make it unique to 12 out of 527 cars.

Must be some defective part within the engine that you just hit the lotto with

This blows I would hate to have a new car and the engine has to be ripped out of the chassis and replaced.

Fingers crossed you get a new F90 ZCP out of this. I wouldn't want to accept anything less than that, personally. Glad you're taking it in stride!

Okay. So how about a recall for the s85 that would explode after 70k miles due to sh*t design regarding rod bearings?

Too much work to be a reputable company? *post still applies years after the original problem*

No.

Lemon Law handles when defects (such as the engine in this case) are NOT replaced.
Depends on the state. Law in NC: The manufacturer makes "a reasonable number of attempts" to fix the vehicle. This means that the car has been repaired for the same problem four or more times, or that it has been out of service a cumulative total of 20 or more business days during a 12 month period of the warranty.

The OR in that is key so having the car out of commission for over 20 days for motor replacement would qualify.

I doubt there are any refurbished motors in existence. The engine is too new.

Already covered this for Illinois, not NC, as OP in Illinois.

Lemon law does not cover owner upset that engine is replaced.

Only applies if car is out of service 30+ days in Illinois. The car is red tagged now and out of service. Thus the clock is on.

While BMW might very well buy car back instead of repair, replace and return (I had a new Sports car of roughly same value inflation adjusted with similar mileage that Company decided to buyback instead of return) they are not obligated to do so unless 30 days pass as a result of the Lemon Law, which was the original statement I responded to.

I don't think most people are trying to make that BMW is *required* to do anything under the lemon law (some are, and I agree that a lemon law claim likely won't work at this early stage). The argument to make is just demanding a new car that doesn't have this major nightmare from day 1, which will probably cause many more problems down the road over the life of the lease, so you expect a new replacement car that doesn't have this huge defect if BMW expects to retain you as a future customer.

I went through this with my 2014 GT3. Don't be afraid to push. I got:
1. $2K for each month out....$12K
2. A bunch of free swag.
3. Weekend in Atlanta to be the first group at the experience center.
4. Extended warranty.
5. Brand new 911S for the entire duration of the delay

I fail to see how a recall about replacing the engine is a bad thing, like some people are complaining here. You get a brand-new engine which comes prepared from factory, the dealer is merely replacing it as a whole.

Maybe a specific employee was working on the engines during that period and set the torquewrench for rodbolt incorrectly...

...ish.

I feel torn on this...
Good - they identified the problem (pretty quickly) and took it off the road and offered a free fix.Better than it blowing up (or otherwise failing) on me while driving.

Bad - I just bought a 6 figure car last month but I'm not allowed to drive it and as of this moment they haven't officially stopped the monthly bills (but I'm sure they will). And they pulled it off the road so quickly no one has been able to tell me how long until it would be fixed/driveable. Also, I feel pretty confident that the guy at the dealership that is going to do the work has NEVER installed an F90 engine. I didn't pay >$100k for it to be in the shop all the time.
