Luckily it’s a lease so I’m not on the hook for resale value. Based on that I’m not sure if I should fight them on it or just take the new motor (assuming I can drive it while it’s on order).
If I have to drive a loaner for the next couple months (my estimate on how long it’ll take to get a new motor) I’m going to be REALLY upset.

My M6 engine replacement was about 2 weeks from diagnosis to pickup. That said, there were more F12 engines in production by the time I had that done, so I'm not sure how much longer the timeline gets on a new car.....but if it's months long, you better be asking them for compensation. I'd be wanting a check to make sure that my total cost per month is only about $500 or less, considering that's the value of most loaner cars they have available. You shouldn't have to make a $1500+ lease payment for months on a car that BMW f***** up.

The dealership got word back from Germany; they aren’t allowed to give the car back to me until the engine is replaced. They fear that something could go wrong with the motor near term. They also don’t know how long until they will have ‘the whole assembly’. He preemptively offered to cover my lease payments and give me any (non-M) car on the lot for however long the they hold onto my car.

I would have a meeting with the BMW NA regional rep and the service manager at your dealership and have them do a buy back on the car. If they refuse have a lemon law attorney write a letter. They should buy the car back fairly quickly.

I wouldn't keep the car at that point even if it's a lease. Could be a world of problems after an engine replacement.

Did they tell you just what the problem with the engine is at all ?

What's you VIN? I'll check the technical campaign that's on your car.

Using the lemon law should not yield any results, especially now that it is recalled as well.

I would take to the rep and try to get a new M5. It is kind of ridiculous they expect you to just go in a non-M car, although the offer to cover lease payments and pick out any car is of course a nice gesture. Really just an awful situation, but I would push for a new M5 lease with perhaps some added incentive (free option, free BMW Individual paint job, free carbon fibre parts or exhaust). A rare situation like this should be treated with rare benefits.

How many BMWs have you had? How many cars have you bought from this delarership? If it’s sizable - I’d generate a list and put it in front of the dealership/BMW. Repeat/loyal customers get better treatment. Since it’s a lease I’d also argue for them to make more payments and add some goodies in for your troubles.

Can anyone verify that this is an issue with BMW North America? if it is a bulletin posted by the OP - so it should be on all of BMW's systems when someone calls to check. I also saw the bulletin - I am in Canada and I will try to find out from my side. I also find it odd that twelve (12) cars - exactly - and that they know this - are all that are affected - instead of a date range. Why would that be? This says that they caught the problem - quite early - and know what it is - and when it stopped - to the car.

So there should be a whole lot more info here - if this is legit.

Its not odd that they found 12 cars with the problem. Computers track every aspect of assembly, even taking photos to make sure every nut and bolt are in place. Could be human error or software error.

It is odd - for the following reasons: the VIN numbers are not listed - and in order to know 12 - not 13 cars were affected BMW knows exactly the issue and the fix - so that means that BMW North America should exactly know about it. When I call - I expect to hear the above - if not - and they only tell me my car is not affected - I will have a difficult time believing this is real.

I'd also second the above about asking for more than just the free non-M car and covered lease payments. While that is certainly a nice offer, if that was the initial offer, I'm sure you can squeeze more out of them.

I filed a formal complaint with BMW North America today and have a call with my BMW case manager tomorrow. Hopefully I’ll find out more about compensation then; I’m asking for a whole new car with additional options.

Not sure about the additional options, but providing you with a new car as a replacement would definitely be the right thing to do.

Lease does not help your case

The fact that you are giving the car back to them does not help your case. I’d do some homework and identify a similar car on a lot and tell them to give you that one instead.
