M5 battery - winter storage
Gents,
I ask any feed back as most likely I will not be driving this car through winter. So, can I connect the tender charger to the hood ports, or does it need to go directly to the lithium battery in the trunk ?. Also do I need to do any other prep like pull the plugs ? or and in the gas additive ? First time doing this. |

The f90 has a lithium ion battery. I would use a lithium ion specific charger, like the ctek lithium us..it won’t over charge the lithium like a normal lead acid battery.. also connecting to the positive and ground terminal under the hood is fine, you don’t need to connect directly to the battery..on the gas I would just top the tank off full so there’s not much room for water vapor to form. If you really want to you could also put the car on jack stands so the tires don’t develop flat spots from sitting.. doing all this the car should be good for at least 6 months no problem

I see BMW@ shopbmwusa.com has a charger they recommend for the M5 for $145 which is compatible with both Lead Acid Batteries and Lithium Ion Batteries. It looks like it is made by Ctek but I can't make out which Ctek model it is. Does anyone know?

BMW is not going to sell something that won't work on BMW's. I purchased the $145 one and it works on AMG, lead acid, and lithium-ion batteries. By the looks of it, it is the more expensive ctek model. I was wondering that same question. It's ready for this winter.

I lived in Minneapolis back in 1982/3 for a few months and the damn car would literally get frozen to the ground; unbelievable. I solved that problem and joined the Air Force. Eventually got stationed near Cocoa Beach (Patrick AFB). I spent most of my 10-year career there. I never did go back to visit MN... |

How long are they supposed to last? I’ve not had great experiences with batteries in my other bimmers over the years.

The BMW-branded CTEK unit is a bit pricey ($135) but works well. I've used it a few times with no issue. I also picked up a NOCO Genius G3500 from Woot recently for only $35 for use on our other cars (it, like the CTEK, is supposed to work for both lithium and AGM batteries).
