Tarrif on European Cars

A little concerned...Trumps threatening a 20% tarrif on all European cars imported to the US. That’s going to be a huge markup on the M5 FYI.. not a political post.. just stating the resulting impact of these tarrifs to potential M5 owners.

I never worry over what might happen. Too much can change overnight. When something actually happens, I evaluate it as is.

Agree with onfirex5 that too much may happen and there seems to be a lot of talk with little action on many of the “threats” that are made.
Further, from what I have read, both parties are against such a tariff given the impact it would have on the American customer as well as the jobs it would effect given almost all of the major European brands have large scale manufacturing done in the US. I believe BMW has plans to increase the capacity at their South Carolina factory - which they may consider abandoning due to such threats.
For all of our wallets, I hope the tariff threats just dissipate.

No way it gets implemented before midterm elections. That would be political suicide.

No chance of his tariff coming to fruition. This is just another example of trump doing some tweeting while on the potty and not consulting anyone who might actually be able to give him real advice on the right actions. I don't think anyone, even in his own party, thinks this is a good idea, given the truly global assembly of automobiles these days.

I hope you’re right. But he is so unpredictable you never know.

The Euro auto manufacturers have already offered a placating reduction in their import tariffs of US made autos and light trucks. I think the threat is an act of brilliance. The most sly fox is the one whose actions you cannot predict. Now, if he follows through on this, I'll do a 180 faster than you can say "no new M5 for me!"

Whatever we (European) buy in the US , we have high taxes to pay ...
So I can understand such a decision , it needs to work both ways.

By saying this , I know that I'm not gonna make my self friends ...

They may not think it's a good idea, but they aren't willing or able to stop him.

Auto tariffs are a foregone conclusion. The question is just when... Seems like it would be around late August based on how long the process took to impose the steel/aluminum tariffs. Section 232 ("national security") tariffs can move very fast.

It's probably going to happen. I'm not surprised by anything he does anymore.

Seems the trade war with the EU has been averted:

It doesn't look like they reached any agreement on autos, but it seems like the auto tariffs are on hold pending further negotiation, which is definitely a good development.
