Sorry man. I was afraid of that. In my f80 it was the exact same. Less than 5 min from puncture to engine seizing. At least you have some other toys to play with until she is back home!

How long did you drive after the low oil pressure warning came on? 4 minutes after the warning?

Yeah 4 mins and 0.5 miles. Was going up hill on cold water canyon a very busy single lane road so was just looking for somewhere to pull out. I will say for something so essential that oil cooler is very exposed

An afterthought....I only use 20-50 synthetic in our performance builds.....the 0-30 is so thin the bearing barrier must be like water.

Sorry to hear that and I hope you don't have to pay for a new engine out of pocket.

Man, sorry to hear that.
It is sucks.

Maybe it is still using the breaking-in period oil where it doesn't coat the bearings?

Isn't supposedly the new synthetic oil technology will not kill your engine if you drop oil pressure out of a sudden?

Bummer. Sorry to hear about this. On a brighter note - December is almost here - perhaps you can order that Individual M5 comp now?

Yeah, my insurance is looking at the car early this week and then it's 20 days for the engine to get here from Germany and one week install. Just hope they know what they are doing!

Did they tell you why the engine locked so fast after the warning? I thought the residual synthetic oil would have been enough lubrication to keep the engine from destroying itself for a few minutes especially at low rpm!!??

I think the 0W doesn’t leave enough lubricity film for the drop in pressure.

If you get the engine oil pressure warning, click it.

Ouch I was hoping you don't have to replace the engine.
Hope insurance will pay most off it. Normally they pay what's damaged... which is oil cooler. They will probably fight it because, you didn't stop right away.
And will not cover the engine which is over 10k plus the labor price.
I hope they pay for engine.
Good luck!

Incredible. I really hate that for you. I’ve blown oil filters out on the dyno due to excessive oil pressure and dumped 8qts at 7500 rpm with zero damage.

I really hate that happened.
Since the M5 is for now a paper weight I had to take the hybrid out for my morning coffee run through the canyons

So my insurance is covering the new engine, cooler and all related parts. Now have to wait for engine to come in from Germany. Parts and Labor $55k.

Also spoke to shop foreman today at my dealer. If you get the red light saying oil pressure low it is not a drill! It takes only 2 mins for the oil to drain from the cooler. Very very fast and the engine will seize right away.
You have to treat it as an accident. Stop wherever you are even if you have to block traffic.

Engine oil cooler is designed to be low to ground and flat against floor so that flat surfaces like driveways or the ground dont damage it. However any sharp items go through it like a hot knife through butter. Just a warning to everyone on this board.

Good info! Is insurance just covering the oil cooler or the whole engine?
