I read somewhere that the next generation M3/M4 will have similar technology with something powering the front wheels.
My X5M has torque vectoring and it made a world of a difference compared to my previous F15 X5 35i in the way it feels during spirited driving. I'm not opposed to change if it makes the car better in every measurable way. Alan

About time they added AWD. Not sure why they didn't just add it as an option years ago. I just don't understand why they take so long to do what they know they are going to have to do anyway. Look how long they took to go Turbo. And how long they took to go AWD. I hope the M3/M4 also gets this option.

I haven't posted here in a while, but I would echo RPiM5's earlier observations. I have a hard time believing that BMW can do anything more with this next iteration of M5 than adding back on the weight through an AWD-type system that they are able to take off through lighter-weight materials and packaging. I owned a 2014 M5 CP and while I loved the power...the weight and heft really (!) disappointed me.
The last two M5's have had their problems IMO. The F10 was too damn heavy whereas the E60 had a crummy, clunky gearbox (SMG). The F10 fixed a lot of things about the E60 (e.g. gearbox), but then got too unwieldy. Maybe this is why M5 sales were not what BMW was hoping they would be. I dissent on this whole discussion: frankly, I think the M guys have been dragged kicking and screaming into turbo engines (legislated) and now into AWD. My 575HP F10 M5 (most certainly under-rated power #s) got the power down just fine. If BMW is only adding 5-10% power to the next gen M5...the move to AWD is not really about getting the power down (yes, 0-60 times will be faster), but playing catch-up to Audi and Merc who have redefined the luxury sport sedan market. I'm fine that more and more people prefer AWD in their high-end sedans and at some point you stop fighting and join in as BMW is doing. However, please don't say this is about getting power down if you are only increasing power that much. Call it what it is: you had the end-run on the market pulled on you by your competitors. As such, unless I am proven wrong (and I am happy for it to happen), I think this next version of M5 will indeed be quicker off the line and it will address what more people want (AWD), but it will not offer any more of that raw sport driving experience that we all came to love in earlier-gen M cars. The sound of the turbo engines is disappointing (even with better exhausts), the cars are too damn heavy and the emotion of driving them is slowly slipping away. I have had four M cars (two M5s, two M3s). I don't know if there will be a fifth in my stable. Prove me wrong, M-div. I would be happy to see that. |

AWD with 20:80 split I would be happy with however, I really hope that BMW follow Mercedes approach with the new E63 AMG (officially revealed yesterday) and offer the best of both worlds allowing the car to adaptively vary the split as required based on conditions/traction, driving style and mode selected etc... yet include a 2WD "drift mode" that forces 100% to the rear - Everyone's happy then!
