Has anyone's warranty actually been flagged when taking in for service?

Hey guys,

Just wanted to know if anyone (tuned) has taken their car in for warranty work and actually been flagged? I know there was a lot of talk about bmw flagging people over the air but they can't actually flag it unless you take it in.

I'm tuned. I get my car serviced at the dealer with no issues.

warranty as in basic service? You should be fine (as long as they dont plug it in)

But if there's a problem, and they plug it in, you will have a prolem.

I think if you are planning to have any tuning done you have to assume that the warranty will be voided for any engine / drivetrain equipment. That is a personal decision everyone has to make , if you are happy knowing that then that's fair enough.
You can obviously see it from BMW's point of view

If you had a problem with say a sunroof I would expect bmw to honour that as tuning would not have any impact on that.

The tuners may warranty their work but I'm sure they won't cover any issue with the car which could potentially end up being a lot of money.

As I say if you go in to this with the facts that's your decision

You could always ask bmw and ask them up front and say if I do xxxxxx what impact does that have. Then you'll know exactly where you stand and can make an informed decision

A software update will delete your tune I am told. Any warranty claim on drive train with a tune likely to be denied. Many stories on here about same. I suppose you can fly under the radar if all you do is maintenance. Risky?

I remember a thread maybe close to two years ago where a member had a tune in his car and took it in for service for something unrelated and the service tech found it and voided his warranty. I believe it was a long thread that somehow evolved into how some members "tip" their service advisors around the holidays.

I've never had in issue across 4 tuned BMWs, going all the way back to 2011.

Until I spun my crank hub anyways.

Basic warranty and service they don't care. I've always had piggybacks, which I swear by, so I've never had to worry about errant software updates by the dealer either. The newer ecu flash tunes are a different story...no experience with them. I've never taken my piggyback down for any reason. Just had it in last week as a matter of fact.

that stuff doesn't matter, not anymore. And it's not even about the SA, it's more about the tech. And BMW is eliminating that variable as well, by uploading all of your info to them when the car gets plugged in.

Spot on, they have gone the same was as Audi in that they put a marker on the car when its plugged in and that stays with it.

If there's a problem and they dig into the data, you will defiantly have a problem. Something like Racechip wouldn't screw around with your ECU and can easily be removed and give you a boost without a real tune. That said, even in that situation they can dig elsewhere and find clues though I suspect it would be harder.

the days of tuning and motors letting go, and having BMW foot the bill are coming to an end. You want to be super fast, buy a faster car in stock form.
