What am I missing here?

What am I missing here? If i wanted to replace the chrome logo with gloss black, why would I buy the emblem for $109.95? I could simply buy the Competition emblem for $53.79 and not attach the "competition" piece? Or am I crazy?

I believe the difference is that one is painted (higher cost) and the other is the vinyl OEM.

That's what I did. Just left the comp part off. Super easy and looks good.

I am concerned doing this myself. Feel like I'll pull paint or clear coat off or something.

Correct, you can go with the BMW version and simply keep the competition off.

We offer the OEM chrome painted as there was not an option before BMW came out with theirs. We still offer it as many still buy them in Black Chrome finish.
