This is great news! The yearly subscription was a minor irritant (in and of itself) but the potential for a slippery slope was enormous....

When I learned of this (after I bought the car), I filled out my BMW customer survey and shared my feelings with them.
BMW had to have known most people's expectations would be CarPlay was included and not subscription. Leaving it to dealerships to inform potential buyers is naive at best.

Sometimes you can get a feel for a company's business ethos. It's in their policies and language. My issue with this concerns the principal of the matter. It was an ill conceived play for more revenue and left me with a negative impression of BMW.

At least they did reverse this terrible decision. But only as it was so bad I'm sure a vast majority of customers complained.

We usually get what we accept.

Apparently they're still charging $300 for 2018s... why would they only half fix this?

I got this email yesterday:

ANNOUNCING CHANGES TO APPLE CARPLAY® COMPATIBILITY.

This is to advise you of an important change to your Apple CarPlay Compatibility option as part of BMW ConnectedDrive.

BMW is extending the Apple CarPlay Compatibility option for your vehicle to remain active in your vehicle for as long as the feature is technically supported. You will no longer be required to purchase a subscription to keep CarPlay active.

This extension will be at no additional cost to you, and there is no action required on your part to receive the extension.

To use Apple CarPlay in your vehicle with your iPhone, be sure to choose “Apple CarPlay” as the connection mode for your mobile device in the Communication settings.

Note:
As part of this change, we also recommend performing an update of the ConnectedDrive services in your vehicle. This can be done by following the steps below:

Depending on your vehicle’s Model Year and Make, navigate to “BMW Assist”, “ConnectedDrive” or “Apps” using your iDrive controller.

Under BMW Assist or ConnectedDrive:
Open “Options” (physical button surrounding your iDrive controller).
Click on “Update BMW Assist”.

Under Apps:
Click on “All Apps”.
Open “Options” (physical button surrounding your iDrive controller)
Click on “Update apps and services”
Once the update completes, we then recommend shutting the vehicle off and allowing a few minutes before restarting the vehicle to check the connection.

Should you have any questions, please contact customercare@bmwassist.com or call BMW Assist Customer Care at 1-888-333-6118. You can check the current status of Apple CarPlay and ConnectedDrive services for your vehicle by visiting www.bmwusa.com/MyBMW/ConnectedDrive.

Kind Regards,
BMW ConnectedDrive

I received the email as well. Haven't had a chance to see if it's actually reactivated yet.

I tried to update but there's no option for it on my version of iDrive. The only option I have is update via USB.

Open “Options” (physical button surrounding your iDrive controller).
Click on “Update BMW Assist”.

Success. So you have to be in Connected Drive, Connected Drive on the screen when you press the option button. Thanks for the update.

I did the software update, but still not seeing CarPlay as an option in the menu. Has anyone gotten it working again after it was removed following the first year of ownership?

I think it's free for iDrive 7 cars only. The rest of us poor folks will have to pay the onetime $300 fee it seems.

I just spoke to BMW Assist. Apparently they are still "actively working" on Apple CarPlay functionality and doing the programming work to make it available again. I was told it could take until the end of January for it to reappear on the iDrive menu and be functional again.

FYI - Fast forward a couple days and CarPlay has now reappeared in the Settings menu for the phone.
