In Europe, the last MT M5 was the E39, and the first and last M6, the E24.
Its because of the US they make MT for the M3/M4. They do not sell in Europe. So, thank you for buying MT in US. |

I switched over to an automatic- added paddle shifters.
Its not the same thing- my left foot has nothing to do- but the Paddle shifter response time is getting better and better. I think I have better control, with faster shift times- than I did with a manual. |

Funny how evolving now implies bigger, heavier, more complicated cars that will eventually need very little input from the driver to operate. Why can't evolving mean, simple, smaller, lighter cars that keep the driver engaged...like back in the day? All of these advancements boosts R/D costs and the consumer pays for it. Doesn't take a dual clutch to get better gas mileage. The move away from manual is simply these companies exploiting technology...good and bad. They create a problem and then solve it.

This does not resonate well with the customers nowaday. They only want the the badge prestige now. I wonder how long can a brand that use his heritage of performance and driving involvement can go without producing said cars until the reputation wears off ?

There's a bubble coming. Look at the prices of Air-cooled Porsches. Insane. JDM prices are also going up. When you have an M6 comp going for $170k and a Nismo GT-R going for $200k...this bubble is bound to pop. I see a resurgence of E92 M3s on the road, too. I think what's cool again are cars of yesterday. Guys aren't on that current mess too much. I also see plenty of E46 M3s, OG Supras, Hondas etc.

Launching a car hard is BS? "most" M drivers don't launch their cars hard every chance they could?...

No. Don't let this online community confuse you. Majority of the owners aren't launching or even tracking. I'd argue most care more about stance and cosmetics but might go for a spirited drive when possible. One can still enjoy the car without hitting redline.

The current and future M5's and M6's too heavy and dull for driving enthusiasts anyway. Almost none of them see the track and most will be bought by older peeps who want something fast and easy to drive. FWIW they do make excellent daily drivers.
As many people have already stated, the most enthusiast-oriented BMW's on sale right now (M2, M3 and M4) still offer manual transmissions. If you want a $100k high performance car that offers a manual, Porsche, Aston and SRT would be happy to oblige. It's a myth that young people are moving away from manuals - this is mainly because we don't have much of a choice anymore with DCT being shoved down our throats, especially from higher end marques. I'm 23 and I'd pick a manual over an auto if it was offered because I don't give a crap about a few tenths of a second on a track if it means I can have ten times the fun while driving on the street. TLDR: The new M5 is better off without a manual, and the manual is better off without the new M5. |

Instead of certifying a manual M5, BMW should certify a manual 3er wagon for me.

So did I... lol
The sad thing about it is that BMW makes some of the best shifting manuals PERIOD !! I do get why they are doing it though.

No Manual M5/M6 -> No Surprise
This is not shocking news.
With seven and eight speed transmissions it's difficult and almost impossible to shift. With DCT the shift pattern becomes insane. Also with paddles and DCT there is no "money shift". BMW no longer hears "but I never over revved the engine, the valet did it". With DCT you can have "no-lift" shifting. A big deal for turbo cars. You can tune out the effects of turbo lag. We all knew it was coming. Get used to it.

This was a good marketing decision, a good engineering decision, and a fantastic sales decision. What it is NOT, is a good emotional decision. I have defended BMW time and again on their past decisions but I'm not going silently here. What differentiated companies like BMW and Porsche was their response to the enthusiasts, the track rats, the car people, the fans, and most importantly, those who wanted not to be the same. Porsche tried this and retracted their decision, now implementing manuals in GT cars once again despite being slower. The M5 & M6 had manuals because they had a SOUL, and the new one may be great, and I'll still like it, but I wish the voices of the silent majority were heard. SAVE THE MANUALS

This might actually matter if those models weren't such bloated pigs. The M4 at its size is right on the cusp of being a blimp so a manual is just acceptable. I'm sure the next M4 will be bigger and DCT only. No thanks I'll continue to worship my E92 M3
