In addition to the performance aspect, I think the carbon roof is like a steel or aluminum roof in that you have more headroom vs. a moonroof will have slightly less head room. What would be nice is if they offered a panoramic moonroof, seems odd not to have one as an option on a 6 figure car.

Does anyone know if the weave on the F90 M5 CF roof is 2x2 or 1x1?

My car just came in, I opted for sunroof (must have in FL), but am going to get a CF wrap for the roof. My CF spoiler and bumper inserts seem to be 2x2 but everywhere I read states the stock CF roof is a 1x1 weave, is this true?

It just seems odd to me that BMW would make the roof 1x1 but the OEM CF add ons 2x2.

CF roof is 1x1 and M-Performance Parts are 2x2.

Have had the moonroof for 2 months now. No regrets at all. I appreciate the extra light in the cabin especially during gloomy Vancouver winters and the extra performance "hit" is completely imperceptible to me.

Would be nice if it were panoramic and maybe went up over the roof when open to preserve more headroom.

Could someone explain this to me, please? What means 1x1 or 2x2? Layers?

It is the weave of the carbon fiber. Here is a link with more details: https://www.carbon.ee/en/n/carbon-fi...erns-explained

It's basically the weave of the CF; 1x1 looks more like a series of dots while the 2x2 looks more like diagonal weaves. I don't think I explained it well but a Google search will show them side by side and you'll easily be able to tell.

Agree. But I still would rather have a non-pano moonroof than none at all. But to each their own. Folks who have their CF room sound like they love it.

Call me drinking BMW cool aid on the CFRP roof, but I was really heart broken that I had the car without moon roof because I got mind as a steal deal and didn't have the option, and if it were to me I would have opted for the moon roof, and boy was I wrong! First this car is so much fun that you're too busy to look for other sources of fun but driving, besides if I am not mistaken it does help lower the center of gravity and lighter too and this might have an impact on the driving experience if that means anything to you at the end if the day it's not a whole hog sports car and you got every right to ask for your GT perks

That type of sunroof bothered me with the Mercedes. When open it looks a mess up on top of the roof. Not seen while you're in the car of course, and there is more headroom with it. But I don't want my lovely car to lose its flowing lines when I have some sunshine inside.

On another note, the car weighs over 4300 pounds with the carbon roof. Adding another 120 pounds (approximately) with the sunroof can't make much difference to performance for any street driving. This is a fast car, but it's not a track oriented sports car. It is a fast 4 door sedan with comfortable amenities, and I think the sunroof is one of them. That said, I do like the look of the carbon roof and wish they would have built a sunroof into it!

Of course there is. Where did I mention any worries over headroom? My quibble is with the look of a sunroof that opens above the roof line. I'm only 6' and have the sunroof in my F10 M5 and it's fine. Bimmer456 mentioned that style of sunroof giving more headroom.

In your previous post , you've said " not seen while you're in the car of course, and there is more headroom with it "

So I understood that you were saying that having a sunroof provides more headroom ...

Of course i was referring to the Mercedes style of sunroof I mentioned in the previous sentence. There is more headroom with it. You don't see the Mercedes above the roof opening while you're in the car.

So if I follow your logic , it should be the same thing in the M5.
More headroom with the sunroof ?

This is getting hilarious. The fact is that the Mercedes sunroof opens ABOVE the roof, do you get that concept? Therefore there is more headroom for that style than a sunroof that is enclosed inside the roof as the BMW is. It is not the same as the BMW, there is no logic involved.

I know that.
But who the hell is talking about headroom with the sunroof open ?
Usually , we want to know when it's closed (when using a helmet , for exemple).

I wasn't talking about headroom with the sunroof open, why are you? But the design of a sunroof with it opening above the roof allows for more interior space, open or closed, and that seemed to be your question.
