It honestly must be pretty awkward. A friend of mine in high school's dad was big time into cars including vintage muscle cars. He had a bright orange Pontiac GTO Judge (I don't recall the year) that was in absolute mint condition and used to get tons of attention. We'd come out from wherever with it parked and often there would be people checking it out.

He'd go up next to them, say "wow! nice car, huh?" then get out his keys, jump in, and drive away.
