Thought I would make this thread a little more positive.
Here are some quick pics of my new M5. Love the car, so I am definitely looking forward to getting OVER the hump of these issues. Hopefully the software update was enough and something like a new fuel tank won't be needed (fingers crossed)

I had the software update on mine for the low fuel pressure shutdown issue and no issues as of day 1 of having it back.

There appears to be a secondary issue now with the vtg control module, but Im not ready to give up over this latest issue. I live close to the dealer!

Lesson learned right there: If you are buying a first model year M car, make sure you have a dealer near where you live

Even if a new fuel tank is needed, at least it’s not an engine or transmission. A fuel tank can be swapped out in one day.

Right, although I would wonder about the potential impact of the dissolved gas tank lining being fed into the engine with the fuel.

I know at first I questioned this as it was only new members complaining about this issue...now that it seems legit - it seems to be a new batch of cars? There have been many deliveries with no issues - the key troubleshooting question is:

What has changed?

Exactly ... the higher numbers seem to be the group.

I think it is a RECENT batch of M5s based on all I am reading...

[update] 2 days and 100 miles after software update and so far so good.
Looking into fuel tank and I agree with comment that even if it can be switched out in a day, if lining is dissolving that CANNOT be good for the engine? I am not an expert on this but it is probably some dissolved chemical that is not 100% benign (or maybe it is considering it IS the lining of the fuel tank).

I will keep everyone posted.

That sounds discouraging. What timing, right?! It seems like we're more or less helping BMW build their car. To put it into perspective though, it is still a technological marvel when you compare it to the Audi RS7 for example I recently had. This M5 is still twice the car that was/is. Its everything you could want and more. Having patience with it getting these updates though kind of kills the instant gratification factor.

Especially in one of these cars where they beg to be driven hard.

very sorry & surprised to hear of the issues with the new cars - I will be hanging on to my F10 M5 for some time, as reading through this, I can't help but think there is an element of Beta-testing going on.... which is not what you would expect given the increase in prices!

Again, I have to say, I love this car so it's a damn shame this happened ...but it is what it is. Looking forward to doing some fun upgrades, but really want to see how it goes for a while.

FYI- Florida lemon law states dealer has 3 chances to fix the problem. So they have used up #1. But yes if the issue happens again, I am going to demand something be done (which I made very clear today to all parties at dealer - service manager, sales rep and general manager).

I have gotten 12 BMWs from this dealer, and I am sure they will try to make me happy one way or another. Hopefully this software update fixes the issue, I will keep everyone posted.
Which dealer in FL. I had this issue on my i8 and it spent more than a month at the dealer.

I am not happy to be reading this. My '16 M2 had a "Powertrain Malfunction" once on the way back from Chicago. I shut the car down, waited 5 minutes and it has been fine ever since (20k miles now). My '13 A8L (4.0TT) had it once in first month, but never again. Neither car needed a software update, what ever "Bug" there was worked itself out???

I have a local dealer but I think they get one M5 allotment every 27 years. LOL. I am looking at leasing one from dealers that are at least 100 miles away and if my car fails on the way home I would not be happy.....

Watching this thread closely.....

Same thing happened with initial batch of F10's. It was actually worse because I believe it was oil pump failing.

That, coolant lines, DTML's, power steering failure, excessive oil consumption.

If the only thing the F90 needs is a SW update it's well ahead of the F10.

Expected since the S63Tu has been around for a while now.

6 days and 300 miles now and no problem after SW update.
Really working to get to 1200 miles...LOL
Loving the car, so I hope it was only SW update. Inconvenience, yes, but luckily easy fix.
Gas tank lining issue doesn't seem to be coming up very much as far as I can tell.

So I still don't think there's been a single report of issues after the software update... knock on wood but this one actually could just be a glitch which would be a miracle in the world of BMW hpfp issues.

There was one member report VTG issue after software update. Not sure if it is really related though.

Agreed, it makes sense as BMW has had the F10 to work out major issues. This is not a new platform w/ the exception of AWD.

Even though the M is a stronger design , it was a good thing that the 550i in the new body architecture had AWD for 1 year before the M5 was released.

Day 1 malfunction for me too

Picked up mine today from Century West BMW in LA.
Vin 2619
I asked them about the service bulletin and if it had been updated and they flat out lied to me. 50 miles in to my first long drive and the car shuts down at 75 mph, coasting to a stop on a dark stretch of HWY 5 north of LA. In 2 minutes I was able to resume driving and made it home with no further issues.

Now I’ll need to go get the software updated for real.

Never trust a car salesman. I will never buy another car from that dealer again.

Speedydad, get the info from them in writing. This way if anything happened to you when the car shut down at least you could sue the living s^&t out of them.
