JB4 on 35i - Impressions
Last week installed te JB4. Here the overall impressions.
NOTE: my 2012 35i is bone stock except for the sec cats that have been removed. 1) Very easy installation 2) Nice to change maps on the fly by steering wheels controls 3) Driving impression: MAP 1 on 97 chilean gas (93 US): noticeable improvement in all-range torque and power. Car is faster, and push harder especially on the highway in 4º, 5º, 6º gear. In my opinion this is the best of the JB4: torque and power on the highway. On the contrary, if you like "short drags" at the traffic lights (1º-2º...), the difference from stock is not so great.... in practice. Traction issues prevent a real performance improvement. 4) Sound: no apreciable changes 5) Fuel economy: worse for the moment (but probably i pushed harder than normal in the last days). Summarizing: a good modification @ 479$ for 35i models. Probably useless for 35is. |

what do you mean by useless on the 35is? I saw significants gains on the before and after dyno on my 35is AND a much stronger midrange and part throttle application. There is also 2 stage limiter built in and traction assist.

I said "probably useless" on 35is..., meaning that aprox. 20 whp or a bit more torque do not transform the car.
My 35i (+60 whp on map 1, aprox, it is 20% more than stock!) is faster than before, but essentially the car feels the same, conserving the "spirit" of a..... "roadster", in term of rigidity, agility, steering wheels response, etc. Starting from 306 HP, for 479 $, it is a good modification. But, starting from 340 HP, is it? Please, read my impressions also taking into account that i came from a 2011 E92 M3 Competition Package. |

you are missing the complete picture. 13-14 target at WOT for 7 secs stock and that's WOT again but stock also tends to run rich at the mid range where as the JB4 map 1 is 13-14 target even at part to full throttle has a much cleaner A/F. It's night and day. I'm running map2 with no problems and the logs are very clean. n54tech has plenty of is and 1M before and after dynos.

I installed the jb4 on my 35is with dci. And a major improvement it was. I also did a 4 gal e85 mix with 93 and cant keep the Dsc from kicking on until I hit 3rd which is a tad annoying... I'm peaking at 16lbs.
It has been my best addition thus far. Can't wait till fbo's and single turbo! Have a merry Christmas. |

it shouldn't cause a night and day difference at all since boost is pretty much the same. however the IS models have the sport + feature (I'm not sure if normal z4 35i's have it to) but that is a night and day difference between normal mode and sport + mode, it is a huge difference. I think the jb4 automatically makes it as if it is running on sport + mode, and thats why people feel like its a night and day difference but its really the same as stock but jacked up to sport +... IMHO

The only thing I dislike is using jb4 or stock, the throttle lag is still evident. |

no i don't have one, I didn't get it because the numbers don't prove it worthy. the IS boosts at 14.5 psi, to safely run the jb4 without downpipes (as they are not available yet) you will be boosting the same amount. i think its just in peoples head to be honest. but again i don't have one and I'm just posting my personal analysis on numbers. So i can be way off here please no one hold this against me as I am not sure.

LOL! 14.5 at WOT for 7 secs.. JB4 = same boost target ANYTIME... your analyses is way off. Part throttle application is night and day between stock. at the track I was chasing down a GT3 3.8 coming off turn 15 at Thunderhill through the long straight. That's not in my head and again my logs in Map 2 and Map 5 on 100 octane without downpipes shows that it's running very well.
stop wasting your time analyzing and talking about it and just get it. Quote:

I have an IS and I ran the JB4 for about eight months or more and I can tell you the car went from a beast to Goadzilla. Torque was constantly available. It was a great mod but for some reason my car started to throw fuel pump codes and and stutter with the JB4 and went into limp mode a couple of times which at 80mph is kind of scary. Im not sure why but it just seemed to be with my car. Terry was vey helpful but it didnt like my car. I figure down the road my pump will actually fail and the JB4 will be vincated that the BMW part was not up to the higher tolerances. The JB4 is brutally fast like a big block. With and without is like going from a 3.0 to 35IS, which I have done. That being said I have since moved to ESS and have had no issues, so go figure. ESS also turns the car into a torque beast but for me seemed more linear. I have had ESS for over six months no issues. Pick your poison, both great tunes.
