What makes a 335i stop on the road
Hi
From your experiences, why are the common things that can fail in a bimmer, that cause the car to stop on the road without being able to continue driving? How frequent are these especially on a 335i? Note: I am NOT asking for things that can break but allow you to continue the journey for a hundred miles, and then turn up expensive. This is not about costs. This is about chances of failure on the highway. (This is a follow up to my previous topic to figure out what exactly to get checked in my car. I realize in my previous topic I posted too long, too many things, some rant and some emotional outburst so I'm posting this topic very to-the-point). Thanks in advance!

Water pump is one. I guess you could continue driving but risk doing a lot of damage to the motor if you do so

To get started, let me post the ones I know:
- running out of gas - battery dead - having a flat (puncture) - headlights gone - HPFP failure - transmission packing up - cooling system (leaking, losing coolant, overheating) - temperature sensor failure, leading to overheating ... Please add to this, common car and bimmer and turbo car problems that cause being stranded.

HPFP and water pump are the biggest things.

So you're talking about failures that will leave you stranded.
Not sure about HPFP, but water pump definitely. Happened to me after having the car for 3 months. Extended Warranty FOR THE F#CKING WIN

I guess I should've mentioned - also, what dashboard lights should a person take as an alert to stop driving and call a tow truck, and what lights to take to the shop the next day.
I used to think: Any orange light- it's ok to continue, but take to the shop as soon as possible Any red light- pull over and stop driving. However as I recently found out, that not necessarily the case. So can I say: Pull over for: - anything related to the cooling system or overheating - anything related to transmission - anything related to oil pressure (that oil light in red) - anything that says the word "ENGINE" in red ... Please add to this Don't stop, take the car in next day for: - brakes light (apparently they drive for a few hundred miles after it turns red) - turn signals - tyre air pressure low (check at next gas station) ... Please add to this. Also if there's any list for "DON'T stop driving", please post here. If we add enough info, it will help newbies like me print the thread like a "checklist" or "how to respond" list and keep it in the car.

Lol @edirtaynine!
Also when something does happen do you guys - call bmw assist - call insurance provider - call nearby service center (if its working hours) - call 911 .. Or something else? Just curious and want to be prepared for the eventuality.

My water pump went out about 3 days ago and it wouldn't let me drive far at all. I had to wait till it was cooled down and darker out so I could take it across the street and have it towed to BMW. Thermostat and water pump and waiting to be replaced after extended warranty authorizes the repair. Good luck with your car! I probably would've considered (if it's what I was really worried about) these things before I bought the car. I would get an OBDII reader so you'll know what to do on your own in case it's something you can DIY! Save's a lot of money and time.
