Don't entirely agree that the M5 would be "just a boring spotlight drag hero". The moment I drove it, I was honestly impressed with its dynamic capabilities on the deserted Alp roads for such a big and heavy beast. To my sentiment, it outruns the M4c I drove before but it made it feel all so easy while the M4c required my full concentration and was a bit more rewarding because of that. An M5 has an incredible bandwidth: it can do slow, it can do luxury and it can commute, it can do track and all of these things with confidence and authority. I don't have the idea that the CS improves this, certainly the CF bucket seats seem a bit out of place here. I don't know for which M5 owner the track limit endurance behaviour is of real value? Why would you buy an M5 in the first place when you do? |

But why?
Really why? Who tracks an M5? If you have the money to track a brand new M5 I would hope you'd have the brains and money to spend on a better track car. |

I can't get my mind around the CF bucket seats: in a near 2 ton limo you put in seats that come out of a Porsche GT3 RS or another track car: compromising the universal usability of the car. The best quality it has to offer... down the drain. |

With the size of the 5 series being what it is you give up a fair bit of fun factor these days vs a more compact M car. The CS should reduce the gap some making it the perfect M5 for me. And it looks fantastic |

I don't know how the unsprung mass reduction will help here. It will assure that there is more grip more of the time on bad roads (like curbstones), and it will reduce maybe slightly noticable the rotative inertion in the first two gears. But the real difference would come from the wheel guidance IMO. Time will tell with the first reviews, BMW M used to be a brand that surprised many of us with their magic in the past. |

All this talk about the M5 not being a track car so why produce a CS iteration? Historically, CS may have been geared towards circuit usage. Is that still the case? Or, is it just a way to take an Autobahn missle, shed some weight, add a few ponies and slap an astronomical price tag on it?

I'd be interesting to see how well the additions of the CS would do on a track such as C/D's annual lightening lap as well as how large the difference in times would be. Currently the M5 holds the 3rd spot (2:55.2) and the M5 CP holds the second spot (2:54.0) for the fastest sedans on the VIR Lightning Laps.

I doubt it though. The sheer savagery of it will likely find enough msrp buyers. |

True, but honestly, it's exactly here that I was impressed with the "normal" M5c. It just makes feel everything a bit normal and bland. I presume that BMW M has been testing and tuning this vehicle for years now for a perticular reason. When they stick the CS badge on it, hopefully the reason is "fun". |

Personally I think this misses the point of the targeted buyer. If I want this type of car I’ll buy an M2CS to go along with the M5.
The M5CS should have added an F1 KERS system. The buyer of this vehicle doesn’t care about weight. If they did they wouldn’t be buying an M5 to begin with. I’ll bet that a significant portion of the weight savings is the wheels alone. I was shocked at the weight difference of the Forged Aluminum wheels vs the standard wheels on my M5 Comp. Huge difference. A KERS system could have easily added 100hp and significant torque in bursts. And, if the KERS system ADDED 100 lbs no one would really care. |

Those things they will start to offer with the next generation M5. Maybe the soon to be released X8M will provide us already a preview of this (750hp/1000Nm).
