Spare Tire Kit / Modern Spare

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience with this tire kit:

https://modernspare.com/product/2017...e-kit-options/

The kit comes with a spacer that apparently allows the spare tire enough clearance for both the standard steel brakes and the CCBs.

Thanks in advance!

I bought snows/second set of rims and a jack. When I travel that jack and a snow/summer tire goes in the trunk. For local driving I'll take the chance with "Honey bring me a spare tire and the jack." I got a flat a few months ago, drove home with air hissing LOL. PITA. Those spray in flat fixers are for very specific flats. I had a large chunk of metal in mine.

(RANT: IT IS JUST DUMB THAT THOSE JACKASSES did not leave a spot for a spare. they are trying to have their fleet gas economy as high as possible which means NOTHING for us actual drivers. My '03 RS had a donut spare to blow up when needed and the spot where it sat was deliberately made too small for a regular spare. Just dumb.)

Totally agree - I think it's unrealistic to think that a tire mobility kit is an adequate substitute to an actual spare, even a donut spare. But there's a long history of M5s lacking any kind of spare tire, so I suppose most buyers don't care...

My dad had a prior M5 circa 1996 (I think it was '95 model) and he bought a spare from the dealer who assured him it was the correct RIM/Tire combination. We were heading to my wedding outside of Toronto from the Boston area and got a flat up in Canada. The spare DID NOT FIT. Luckily there was a BMW dealer near by and they had a tire for his car. After that we both buy spares AND TEST FIT THEM, for all our cars. I had a spare for my M2 also. I sold that spare for what I paid for it. LOL. He had the M Coupe back in the day and had a spare for that which took up the entire back LOL, but never got stuck again.

Thanks for the reply. Reading through that thread, it sounds like you’re happy with the kit. Where do you store the kit in your M5? Mine won’t be delivered until March, so apologies if there’s an obvious answer to this question - I just don’t know what’s under the floor of the trunk.

There is no indication in their website about it clearing the CCBs. The wheel is only 18" and the CCBs require a minimum of a 19" wheel.

I store the spare on top of the trunk floor. There are tie downs back there that line up with the center of the wheel. I used a standard ratchet strap to secure it. The kit is thin so it doesn’t occupy a lot of space. A small sacrifice imo. I was 40 miles from home on a Sunday afternoon recently and found a nail in the shoulder of my rear tire and thought I might have to change it. Thankfully the nail was tangent to the circumference of the tire and didn’t penetrate.

I offered to test these kits for modern spare and we solved fit issues with a custom spacer. Both kits have the same wheel but different spacers. On the first trial I didn’t think the 18” wheel would work for either vehicle. My x7 has 21” wheels. The spacer is nearly 1 1/2” thick so the spare wheel clears the rotors. I can’t speak for carbon brake rotors as my M5 is not a comp. Matt with modern spare was very helpful and might be able to answer that question.

I do not miss the trunk space at all. These trunks are quite large. Mine is not a daily driver and I’d rather lose a little space than see it on a roll back truck over a small tire issue.

I emailed customer service, and they told me that the spacer they provide with the kit will allow for clearance over the CCBs.

One more question for you - is there space under the trunk floor for the spare? I think the G30 has an option for a spare tire, which I presume would fit under the trunk floor.
