I'm not a fan of Tesla (and especially Model 3's), but they had a Plaid Model S at the local store and it was pretty nice. It felt much more like a luxury car, and the seat was much better than Model 3.
Having said that, M5 was the most comfortable seat I have sat in a long time... I think there have been a lot of good points made here. Since drive-by-wire, there has never been any road feel. Most people hate fake engine sounds. High performance NA engines have nearly all be replaces by turbo. Manual transmission is also becoming rare. What can you do? Probably the best thing is to buy a few used cars that have the features that you want and take good care of them. Soon they will all be gone... |

Just got out of Tesla Plaid after having it for 3 days. Acceleration is quite crazy, really great to experience. But that's about it.
Brakes are simply horrible! Handling is nothing like my F90. Same turns I took with ease on M5, Plaid just starts understeering, and the big weight is felt. Quality is, as everybody says, crap! Gap issues everywhere, random noises around the cabin. Rear lid making weird noises like some piece of rubber get caught on the way of opening. Door handles feel cheap. No soft close doors is really annoying too. Overall I'm not impressed. Acceleration is crazy, but having the car on the driveway didn't even make me feel excited to go drive it again. Plaid is not for me. As i was considering it for a daily. M5 feels like a way better balanced car, with great power (ofc not plaid level) great brakes and handling. Hope this helps somebody! |

I went for it from a red light versus a P100D two days ago. I'm still laughing about it. Despite getting a good launch, I was absolutely obliterated. It was laughable. Except for the noise the M5 was making, the Tesla driver might've thought I wasn't trying. I'm still happy with my car selection as I like the looks, the luxury, and the reliability of the M5 versus the Model S, but the destruction was fairly unbelievable. I'm curious what the 0-60 will be on the hybrid M5 when it arrives in 18 months. The weight of a V8 engine plus batteries might mean that it's still slower than the Tesla.

To your comment about in 18 months.. where do you get that from? I still haven't seen confirmation when the G30 is coming to an end. Has it been stated anywhere that the G30 will not be made for MY23? If this (MY22) is the last G30 model year, it would be the shortest run for a 5 series in history by a year -- which is certainly possible but I still haven't seen a source for this yet.

I think that timeline for the G80 makes sense and then an M5 a year later. So late 2024 (MY25) for it.

I sold my plaid after 7 months of ownership to get back in an F90. The Plaid was super quick and the technology is awesome. That being said the ride quality, steering and interior quality all suck. Not to mention Tesla service is trash. Very happy with my choice to go back to BMW.

There is a good perspective! A drive or two is one thing. Living with a car for 6 months is the real test. I thought maybe I would be happy with one because all the tech would keep me occupied — how much range and I using, where should I recharge on a trip, etc. but the reality is I don’t use most of the tech on my F90. Still, I have yet to complain a car is too fast for me and I think the Plaid speed would be entertaining.

Attempts to make the plaid into a track car aren't going well.

Does anyone else have any more thoughts on this matchup?

I had a 2014 M5 and recently had a 2020 M5. Now I have the S Plaid. For street use (not track) I like the handling of the Plaid. Not over the M5 but it handles fine. It is heavier but the center of gravity is low. I find it fun to drive beyond just straight line speed. The acceleration though is goddamn addicting. You get that feeling in your stomach that happens on amusement rides. I love the tech and I am cool with fewer buttons. The stereo is excellent and no major drop in quality over the B&W in my 20 M5.
I haven’t had any build issues except a paint correction that got fixed. I will get another Plaid when my lease is up in a bit over two years. I have only used my level 2 charger at home and have not road tripped it. It’s my daily. I have had five V8s in a row over 15 years and I do not miss the sound. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the V8 sound. But different is good too. It is fun to use the acceleration of the car while also being stealthy and quiet and not drawing as much attention to myself doing it. It can also be nice to just have a quieter drive. Totally cool with differing opinions on this. I am not going to get my feelings hurt, LOL, if others see this differently. Have fun with whatever you drive. If you are in this forum you likely enjoy driving. |

Hopefully you bought that plaid recently cause that depreciation is sickening and makes normal Bmw depreciation look like a bargain. |

I think we need to extend a hand to our pre summer of 2023 Plaid brothers, let them have the all the wins, take away their shoes laces, make sure they eat and show up for work. Plaid went from $150K (well this January essentially) last year to $89K this year, so you got people sitting $60K under, basically over night.
Just cheer them up by reminding their car's 0-60 times and make sure to tell them, while they might be $60k in the hole, just think of how much they're saving on gas and oil changes. Quote:
Not sure why he didn't elaborate, the mid 8s M5 is in Russia, done by a tunning/fabrication company. I believe its still running on stock internals, bigger turbos, meth, fabricated intake/exhaust manifolds, all the piping, upgraded fuel system, ecus and tuning. The car was test a car, but they essentially have a package that customer can buy, they charge over 100k USD, to make your M5 CS run 9s. The "street" tune is 900hp at the wheels, you can see in the video during city driving, punching the gas pedal makes the rear kick out like a RWD would. Going straight. Some interesting things to note: The cooling in the vehicle is stock (radiator, oil coolers), in fact they praise the engineering of it, they said no aftermarket cooling solutions exist, in fact they use S63's radiators/coolers when tuning other cars. Just remember they tuned this car to run 1/4 miles not track days at 95F at Thermal, California. They were able to get the car to run sub 9.5 on stock turbos. Transmission is holding up, but they expect a full rebuild, as in the current state with how many launches they they expect 20-30K km, i think that's too optimistic, but essentially maybe 10k miles before it starts slipping. Everything else in the drivetrain is still stock. There is a dual counter in regards to launches, there is a launch counter and "hard shift" counter, they had to reset both. The car's keeps an eye on a lot of things when driven hard, mentioned something about high angle too. Now to get to the mid 8s and have a world record, they went for broke. They increased the boost essentially for the car to make 1200hp+ and it was either going to blow the engine, or get them a record. Which they did at 8.8, there was an M5C that did 8.6 or 8.7 the following few days, the CS came back and did the 8.5 a few days later. On draggy it ran a 1.80s 0-100km. The records were set on race slicks on prepped surface, after many attempts. And you're not driving that tune on a street. Its very impressive, but its worth mentioning the Plaid gets its times stock, straight from a dealer, not on a brink of blowing up, with street tires. This CS runs same times as Plaid after 100k worth of mods (on slicks). Last edited by TFBravo; 11-21-2023 at 02:52 PM.. |
