Not quite. Perks of true RWD is reduced weight and driveline loss. 4WD cars don't get the former or even all of the latter by simply disconnecting the front axle. Still a cool concept though.

Maybe as an option. Otherwise keep in mind that the M3/4 has a lot less power and caters to a different market (more track rats than the M5, for example), reducing both the need and appeal of such a system. It might also be much more difficult to implement this with a manual transmission, which I think will survive at least one more generation on the M3/4.

"True rwd" meaning what compared to the solution they are offering?

If you can choose rwd only on the M xDrive, then that is true rwd...

Of course a "rwd only" version with 63,5kg less weight would be a different scenario... But how many M5 customers would trade superior traction combined with a rwd only option for a rwd only car that is slower and can't do anything the AWD car also can? It's not like the M5 is a track car where those 63,5kg you would save actually would make a difference under braking and cornering... The F90 is indicated to be as much as 70kg lighter than the F10 anyway
I think true RWD meaning not requiring DSC fully off. I can't imagine that the extra power over the F10 is so huge that it simply wasn't possible for DSC to keep things reasonably in check in RWD mode. On the other hand, BMW not wanting to spend the money to develop an RWD DSC mode, or perhaps wanting to deliberately discourage use of RWD mode to convince everyone that 4WD is "fine" or "even better", maybe in preparation for dropping the option entirely next generation, I could definitely see.

I think at least what they are saying is that in the sportiest setting it send enough power rearward that there would be no reason for it... I guess we'll see but early signs seem positive to me

I was expecting at least 560 torque. Bmw should've added more torque since awd gives you more freedom for power.

Will there be ZCP, CS and GTS models further down the line (as per current rumoured M expansion)? If that's the case this is the "entry" level M5 and more HP, torque, weight reduction, performance, etc is down the road.

No, I heard...

"BMW M stands for precision and agility in the high performance segment, not for a specific kind of technology."

So the next time someone says "It is not an M car because it doesn't have..."

I'm sure it will be an awesome car, but I wish BMW would apply some more body treatment to widen the front and rear wheel arches. I know the appeal of an understated / stealthy package, but I want its appearance to be a lot more menacing.

I still have hope that the production package looks really aggressive

Ya maan!

Excited is an understatement. The M guys could be on the forefront of something special or a point where they get it horribly wrong. I am betting they will pull ahead on this one.

One wish would be that they allow a driver mode that has RWD with the MDM safety net for those of us who are not racing aces.

Finally they have learned. BMW used to say M would never have turbo, no SUV, no AWD, but have repeatedly shoot themselves at the foot, so now they its nothing in particular, as long as it performs.

Here in the US in the Twin Cities, we have M drivers who've always driven in snow....its the salting of roads that annoys us. ugh!

To be fair, in regards to the sliding rear caliper, both the E63 AMG and the RS7 have sliding rear calipers as well.

Not correct on the G30/31 rear calipers BTW.

Since they all have electric e-brake, also the models with "sport brakes" have the same floating calipers as on G30/31 models with the "std brakes"...

With all the news breaking, I think this dropped off of the radar for the best look at the front bumper:

Hmm.........why can't BMW M have nice stock exhaust sound?

BMW needs to take notes from Audi Sport and MB AMG on how to make force-induction performance cars with strong stock exhaust sound...

M has a lot of experience and history.
I find this new M5 to be, above all a great concept and it shows a slightly new thinking from M.
It's like their thinking ahead and makes the best high performance car they can, and history and tradition then takes second place, as it should.
I applaude this move, and i think there will be more of this same tech in future M products, maybe not the next M2, but surely the new M3/4 will have this X-drive solution and the ability to switch off the 4x4 drive system, makes perfect sense!
The comparison with E39 also makes alot of sense, it should be the best 5 series since the icon E39, let's see if it really lives up to it. As for me, i'm heading to see the G31 on Saturday, it's a looker.

Is that the the one OJ drived? Oh no wait that was a white Ford Bronco, lol. And I'm sure that was four-wheel-drive not all-wheel-drive, big difference!
