On the fence between m5 and m550

I am looking for a family hauler that will also serve as my daily (unless the dog heads to day care). I live in WI and about 40 minutes from the nearest dealer. I drove an m550 yesterday and really liked it. It was a cpo 27k miles, 2019 and $61k. I also found a 2019 m5 comp in DG for 75k with 36k miles. I know this is preaching to the choir, but while more expensive I suspect the M5 would hold its value a bit better since I keep my cars typically less than 3 years. Should I go for the m5 or stick with the m550? The m550 is local but the m5 is a flight away.

I would buy the car you like more. I would not buy an expensive used luxury car based on how well you think it will hold its value. It seems like you were not M5 shopping to start with, so why compromise to spend more on a car you don’t really want? Most big luxury BMW plummet in value a few years out of warranty, which is where yours will be heading fast when you sell the now 3 year old car in another 3 years.

My initial reaction is to go with the lower mileage 550. It's basically got a year's worth less wear and tear on it.

I have an LCI M5C. It serves as an excellent family hauler. Just did a round trip to the beach with two kids in the back, one in a car seat. I haven't driven a pre-LCI M5, but my understanding is that the suspension/ride is a lot harsher on comfort setting than the LCI models.

Do not drive the M5 before the M550 if you are even considering the M550.

I was going to choose between a S560, M550, and M5. Drove M5 first and here I am

Depends on what you like. The 550 will ride softer and be softer in every bit. That being said, the M5 is a stiff beat you kind of car either. The wife drove both and wanted the M5 as the family car and truly believes it is the best family car. Smooth, fast, unassuming to those who don't know cars and comfortable. Different charactor between them as they are intended for different people who prioritize different attributes. Think about the difference between the entire line up of the 5 series range and you will see what is ideal for one is not for the other. Best of luck deciding where you fall on the spectrum.

Was in the exact same boat as you, I loved everything the M550I had...up until the point I drove the M5. Will the M550I be everything you need and be a wonderful daily driver yes! I drove an M5 and that was it, as others have said if you are happy with the M550I stick with it and don't drive the M5.

Honestly, in your situation—based on the facts that a) you’re not in the GOTTA HAVE the M mindset, and b) the M550 is cheaper, closer, and c) you don’t keep them that long anyway…go with the M550.

Drive both. M5 will hold its value better as it already depreciated 40%. If you want performance and luxury buy the M5. If you don’t care about having the fastest then 550 will do. Nothing wring with M5 with 36K miles and being out of warranty.

But see, pre-LCI, you’re talking the (apparently much) firmer suspension on the M5, particularly as opposed to the M550i, I would imagine, and if he is looking for a “family-hauler”…

The M550 is a great car, but if I got the M550 I would spend the whole time regretting and wishing I got the M5. Both the M5 and M550 are good family cars and daily drivers in my opinion, but if it were me and I had an option between the two it's a really easy choice.

+1

My username reflects where I started. I bought an M5 after test driving the M5 I was sold. And so far I am happy with my decision.

The question you should ask yourself is which car do you like better and would buy if they're both the same price?

Personally, I think the m5 sounds like a better deal...

Base MSRP on the m550 was mid 70K I think (74-80k ish?) depending on options?

Base MSRP on the m5C was 110-120k ish depending on options...

So if you look at it like that the M5 was @40k more new.

Now the m5 is only 14K more used, yes, with a little more miles... but even still same miles wouldn't be 40k more.

Some could argue much of the depreciation has already happened on the m5, to me it looks like the m550 may have a bit more depreciation to happen before the rate of depreciation slows down and starts to level out.

So I ask which one would you buy if they're both 61K?

Could also consider it from a new price perspective.

If the m550i was 75k new, and the M5 was 115k which would you buy?

Now, consider you could buy an m550 for 75k (msrp), and get a new m5c for 89k (14k more than the 550), so basically a discount off msrp of @25,000.00. Now which one would you buy?

To me the m5 looks like a better value.

All things being equal down the road... miles, options, condition, etc on both cars, the m5 in theory should always be worth more, and be more sought after.

The only reason I wouldn't consider the m5 is if it doesn't fit your needs. If there is something about the m550 that fits your family, driving habits, utility needs, whatever that may be, then go with the m550.

Im an advocate of always getting the model you want. 14K isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things. (easy to say from a key board I know) but a lot of people opt for the lower model because it fits a strict budgetary need. With that said, if the M5 is something you've always wanted and its maybe just out of reach cost wise, see what you can do to tune up your budget, or make sacrifices elsewhere... if not, all that will happen is you'll park next to an m5 at a grocery store, or one of them will leave you in the dust one day on the way to work, and you'll be back in the market looking for an m5. THEN, at that stage, buying the m5 will cost you A LOT more, simply based on the short term ownership.

Reality is the 550 and m5 are both heavily depreciating items and neither should be considered if depreciation is a big factor. You should buy a Toyota, or Honda, if you want something that doesn't depreciate much.

But im in the camp if you dont buy the one you WANT more, you'll be back in a short time buying it, taking a bath on the one you settled for.

This is all good advice. All things being equal, I would naturally gravitate toward the m5. And I just found out the m550 was in a “fender bender” which shows up on the car fax. So, it’s certified but does not have a clean history.

Maybe I’ll just keep my eye out for an m5 closer to home. It’s hard to get a feel for the car with it being across the country.

Then with that said, sounds like you have your answer.

If you naturally gravitate to the M5, it fits your needs, fits your budget. Thats the car to buy, and I wouldn't compromise unless you have no choice but to compromise.

Search around for a 2020 M550 and dont look back.

Massive engine upgrades to include M5 internals and the same Torque a M5 puts down. This car never ceases to amaze me at how fast it climbs from 60 to 100mph within mere seconds. I dont need anything else. This car, by itself, will put you in Jail and suspend your license if you dont realize what a beast you're driving and what it truly can do.

Just like the M5 the 2020+ M550 HP/Torque Dyno numbers are very understated. It makes significantly more power than 523 HP/ 553 TQ according to stock Dinan Dyno runs.

Drive both and get the one that makes you happiest. Don't make it any more complicated than that imho.

Good luck!
