My M5 has the 706M Wheels, it came with Pirelli P Zero, 275/30/20 Front and 285/30/20 Rears.
My rears were shot up so I changed it to Michelin P4S 295/30/20. Fronts were stock pirellis. After getting the car back from the shop I was pushing the car alot, when I cross 100 or 120MPH a message comes on the dash it says "Four wheel drive system, Cont driving possible" When I saw that I slowed down and it went away within a minute. I thought it was probably some glitch but everytime I push it hard or go above 120mph it shows up. I asked my shop what could be wrong, they said the 295 michelins can cause this. They suggested to go 285 Michelins or Pirellis and it would solve the problem. Some people in F90 groups told me 295s could be the reason because 275 on the front and 295 on the back makes a big difference which makes the diameter 1.9%, Im not sure what that percentage means but I guess lower the better. Im coming from a M3 F80, I ran through 5 different 295/30/20 michelin P4s, they were awesome no issues. Is it different with the M5 because of the 4WD system? Should I just check in with dealer? It will be just too much work going back to stock map and making appointment with dealer thats why dont want to go unless its a major issue and I need to visit. P.S If anyone is interested in my 3 day old P4S just let me know! |

Running 295-275 setup on 21" wheels w/ zero issues for about 2 years.

You’re running tires with a different thread pattern and slightly larger size in the rear. While the size is probably fine, the thread pattern probably messes with the xdrive. I’d at least switch to the same tire model front and back. If you want peace of mind, switch to OEM size in the rear.

Agree fully. Abran_tasrif Tires have different tread patterns. Are they installed correctly? See the video below - they could have an incorrect direction installed. Next thought I would install the same model as not all tires can work together. Ensure the upsized tires work, Tirerack is good at confirming this. Also, within I Drive- they have settings for tires/size. Not sure if the AWD system takes this into account. But if you have it set for winters 18/19s and running 21s the system could be freakout. In general car dynamics especially with computers are sensitive and the AWD system may be overworking to adjust for the miss-match. Probably not an issue if you just did the switch and had no issues beforehand. I wouldn't run what you have long term. Replace all 4 to the same make/model, then ensure you have the right sizes as the tires are staggered stock and ideal ratios should be kept as the system is set for the stock setup. More than likely, as others have mentioned, related to running different brands on front versus rear or some sort of install issue.

Tire size for sure. You put a brand new one size up tires on the rear with semi worn fronts in original size on the front. You could get away with it if both tires were new, but since front tires are worn to some degree (making them even smaller in diameter) the variance between front and rear wheel speed is right at the edge of allowable limit. With the small amount of tire growth at high speeds it exceeds allowable delta between front and rear. Put on new 285 front tires And call it done.

My car seems to accelerate fine but after a few pulls it makes a stutter noise or it feels like something underneath the car is moving around especially under heavy acceleration. I hear it mostly after 100MPH Im not sure if my transfer case is causing this issue or not. Regardless I might go to OEM P Zeros on the back or just upgrade the front to P4S 275s to match my rear P4S 295s. |

So you're also running smaller diameter in the back, which the car really doesn't like. I wouldn't drive it much like that if I were you.

I'm running 4S
285/35/20 front 305/35/20 rear No issues. Reason I went with plus size is at it corrects the odometer as well. No more 3mph behind.

For anyone worried about going 275/295 or 285/305 and it causing issues with the X Drive I think this thread shows it is a non issue. OP was running 275/35 front and 295/30 rear and it only caused intermittent issues. That is a huge difference in tire height! 295/30 is 27” and 295/35 is 28.1”.
