I'm curious why an E60 M5 versus an E39, F10, or the F90 M5?

I had an E60 545i for 9 years. Loved that car but after 9 years I discovered that the insulation on the electrical wires was crumbling and flaking off. Turns out BMW used biodegradable materials in the car. That frightened me into trading it in for a new car, before I started having real issues.

Had an E60 M5 around 7 years ago. Absolutely fantastic, one of the best cars I've owned, it was meant to be my daily and an LP-560 as the weekend toy, but I actually preferred the E60 strangely and dare I say it, I found it more enjoyable than the F90, but I'm not sure if that would change if I drove it again now. The SMG is absolutely terrible unless you have it in the fastest setting, where you have to turn all traction control and DSC off, then it becomes a real animal. Did 14,500 miles in the car without a single issue, and I bought it with 37,000 miles on the clock, did 3 Nürburgring trips and multiple track days, I did have the extended BMW warranty for peace of mind. If you get one, put some StopTech pads on it, or even the full brake conversion kit, with better fluid, as the standard brakes are very bad.

Do your homework, OP. No doubt this is a badass ride, but it definitely had its problems.

I had an E60 535xi and was always envious when I saw that M5. It was a great looking car. It's one where the look of the M5 just really set it apart from the other models in the series.. and by looking quite a bit better.

The gearbox on them are extremely unreliable, and quite a bit can go wrong. They're not cheap to fix. They also use a lot of oil. I think I was going through a litre every 1000 miles which is about right for the E60, so keep an eye on that. It's the one car where I've taken out an extended warranty due to all the horror stories but never actually needed to use it. Mine was very well looked after before I bought it. Wish I'd kept it now. Sold it and bought a new Range Rover which broke all the time…

If you really want one, buy one. They are available for sale. Then you can experience the ownership of the E60 M5 firsthand.

I want an E60 M5 or M6 stick shift that's had its rod bearings swapped and in mint condition. Do these exist?
