Winter Tires on OEM Wheels

Hello all,

Has anyone here mounted and demounted winter tires on their 20" oem wheels during the 4 years of their lease? Was there any performance degradation of the tires? Any leaks either on the winters or on the oem pilots?

Yep, I am using the same 20" wheels for winter and summer tires, although only two winters so far but no degradation

Have you experienced any problems or issues with the mixed tread patterns?

I've pretty much decided to go with the PA4's too. Tread pattern is different, the speed rating is different between the fronts and the rears which is why TireRack doesn't list these tires as available for a 2020 Base F90. Here's the explanation I got from TireRack about this setup.

"Michelin makes the Pilot Alpin 4 in both sizes, but they have different speed ratings, which is why they do not show up as a match for your vehicle. The rear have a lower "V" rating and the front have the higher "W" rating. It is not recommended to mix speed ratings, but if you have to it is recommended to put the higher rated tire on the rear."
Suppose it's possible to use a square setup and avoid the speed rating dilemma.

Thanks for the info. I guess this won't be much of a concern for me as I don't think I will be exceeding 100 MPH on my snow tires ;-)

No issues, they work fine. About to put them on for the third winter season.

I use the oem wheels and i have the michelin PA4 in size 285/35 -20 mounted on both the front and rear wheels in a Square tire ( but not wheel) set up with the same tread pattern on all four tires and have been very happy with this set up.
Frankly, I dont understand the point of the tiny 10mm width stagger of the OEM set up as such a small stagger doesnt provide meaningful stagger benefits and one loses the benefits of a square set up on an awd vehicle from a tire rotation and longevity and exchangeability perspective

I have not read BMW’s reason for the stagger, but it is so small it is not for looks. Could be to add some under steer to keep inexperienced drivers safer or it could be to reduce the possibility of tramlining or it could be there is less front fender clearance.

BMW sells a 19” snow wheel package with factory wheels, tpms and tires for around $3500. I bought a used one. Normally I put snows on stock wheels and buy wider and lighter aftermarket 3 season wheels, but decided 20s are pretty big for snows. The taller sidewall of 19s is better in the snow, but obviously worse for handling when pavement is dry.

I have not done the semi annual tire swap thing in decades. With these big diameter wheels and very low profile tires, the less changing the less risk. Also, I change my the wheels myself on our cars. If you just lease the car for 3 years, it probably makes sense to have a shop change tires, or maybe even if you cannot change them yourself or load four 50+ lb wheels and tires into your car to take to a shop to have changed. Tires alone would be easier.

I think i will go with Pirelli Pzero Winter on my stock wheels.
Go with a winter tire that made for sporty cars. I've heard that M cars traction control can be a bit finicky on what tires is on.
